64GB in Quad MP ?

I was wondering if somebody already tested 16GB DIMMs in a MP.
Hynix and Samsung are offering 1066 MHz DIMMs at already reasonable cost.
Some dealer is offering them on eBay in Germany.

I was checking the Intel RAM test page and it says that these DIMMs are tested here: http://www.intel.com/technology/memory/ddr/valid/ddr3_UDIMM_RDIMM_results.htm#1DPC_1

If this is true a Quad MP could run with 64GB RAM and be quite future proof concerning the RAM configuration.

But, it certainly has been brought up before - asking pretty much the same question as you. And well, no one in that thread tried it.

Four will run at 800MHz rather than 1066MHz as they are quad-ranked. The Mac Pros can address 64GB of memory.

even if he sold them to me at 3 for 1500 I can't buy something with a 1 week warranty/exchange and pay that much. I am thinking these sticks would work. 48gb ram in a quad would be nice for the right user. The price will drop in time.



I found this ebay seller even lower 850 for a pair of 16gb sticks and he will take an offer.

I was tempted to do a test ....
Although I am perfectly happy with my Quad and 32GB (4x8).
But I just checked this seller again and now he is actually offering
even 1333 MHZ 16GB modules at a little higher price point but specific for
the 2009/2010 Nehalem and Westmere MPs !!!

Of course I don´t know if this seller is as reliable as OWC, but since Intel is also confirming that these modules work, I have little doubt that the Quad MPs should work with 48GB or even 64GB. Which is certainly interesting news for many guys here that are buying the 8/12 core MPs purely for their 8 RAM slots.

On the Samsung Semiconductor website they have a document where they advertise their "green DDR3 RAM". They claim a power reduction of 75% from ddr2 to their new ddr3 modules, that is 28 Watt for 48GB with ddr3 versus 102 Watt for 48GB with ddr2 RAM. Impressive if true.

This post made me look up what quad ranking is. Never even knew about it. It makes me wary of cheap RAM that doesn't list it's ranking.

The 16GB Samsung modules are 1333MHz dual rank if the specs in the eBay offer is correct.

I would ask why anyone would need 32GB of ram in total at all... but we'll eventually hit the 100's (if not 1000's) of GB of memory in less than a decade.

It would be nice. Unfortunately such a setup costs a lot of money.
