The battery appeared to drain quickly today - so with about 30% charge remaining I put it on wireless charging for a few hours and when I went back to get it the screen was 100% non-responsive. Tried wired charging for an hour and still dead. Plugged into iTunes for a restore and the iPhone was not even recognized. Tried all the button mumbo jumbo - nada.

Local Apple store can not even look at it until next Wednesday for diagnostics - I'll be there first thing in the morning - my diagnostic is simple - it does not turn on - give me a new factory fresh phone - I really don't care what is wrong with it.

Bummer....

Which is exactly what Apple will do, Is provide you with a warranty phone likely in a white box replacement or perhaps new. Not every iPhone works the way we want to, but that's why customer service is crucial when you spend a lot of money on the phone like the iPhone X to stand behind the Product.

if you can just turn up at a local apple store and be nice. Im sure they will see you and sort it there and then. I've done it a few times...

I kind of had a similar problem. Phone was red hot and displayed temperature warning saying it needed to cool down. Switched phone off where it continued to stay red hot until it depleted the battery from 70% to 0% in about 40 minutes.

Left the phone to cool down for a few hours. Went to plug it in and nada. Left it for 12 hours on charge and it finally had enough charge for it to boot but immediately displayed temperature warning again and the phone was red hot. I also noticed when it was dead and charging the rear where the cpu is was getting fairly warm but as soon as booted it went to red hot mode. It just seems that the cpu was always going at 100% no matter on or off.

Not sure if yours is exhibiting the same problem or not but I feel your pain. It's very gutting. I made an apple appointment for the day that I got back and they did their diagnostics testing and couldn't get any power to the phone and concluded it was dead. They straight up swapped it for a white box replacement as I was 5 days out of the one month period.

As you are having to wait till Wednesday for your genius appointment it may be worth walking into an Apple store during the day as they do allow for walk-in appointments and will tell you how long the wait is. If you go very late as in the last hour or two before closing they will most likely say you need appointment as there is no availability that day.

Hope this kind of helps you out. Rest assured they will definitely replace your phone as it is a warranty fault regardless.

Thanks for the responses - confident they will replace it. My gripe is how long I have to wait for an appointment for what should be a two minute "diagnostic" check (yep - dead, won't power up - you need a new phone).

I have a concern regarding a "white box" replacement - are those not iPhones that someone had a problem with - Apple fixed it - and now I have a repaired phone someone else had a problem with.

My experience with Apple quality over many years has been most positive almost zero issues. I recently jumped on the new 4K Apple TV and it was totally defective - never got it working and returned it - now the new flagship iPhone problem - my experience is not going in the right direction.

And a trip to an Apple store in the mall on December 22 - OMG......

Apple stores are on extended hours. My recommendation is to look up the hours of your nearest store and pop in first thing. I wouldn't doubt you would be seen immediately

Try to reschedule your appointment online and you may end up with an earlier one. It has worked several times for me in the past where I set an appointment and check back latter and am able to re-schedule the appointment several days earlier.

A cup of coffee and a couple of Advils down the hatch - I'm geared up for the Christmas Mall experience LOL. The appointments are still booked up - so I'll try my walk in luck - need my phone 4 sure.

I'm not sure what the white box replacement is - I'm convinced it is a repaired iPhone which sucks as a warranty replacement for a flagship model only 6 weeks old. Is my understanding correct?

Update - made it to the Apple store and was routed to the Genius Bar wait line. The folks ahead of me were being told about a 90 minute wait - Yikes. When I got my turn I explained my case and they routed me over to the corner and said a tech would be out fairly soon. It sounds as if they do have some sort of triage process in place. The tech arrived about 10 minutes later - I explained all the steps I had gone through, she hooked up some type of diagnostic cable and a few minutes later her laptop displayed a power charging connection failure. Her thoughts were that a connector w/I the iPhone had come off and a new phone was needed. It was in a small, flat, white box not much bigger than the iPhone itself. Two people assured me that these were NOT repaired iPhones but came from a warranty supply - perhaps they save some small $$$ on not having to supply the power adapter / cable / ear buds / whatever - who knows?

At any rate, she did her job quite professionally, very quick, thanked me for my explanation of what I had already done, and 40 minutes after arriving I was on my way.

Bummer that I got a bad iPhone

KUDOS to the Apple Store and the tech for a rapid fix to the issue on a mobbed Christmas shopping day

As to that little white box - time will tell but it looks primo and fired right up (battery charge was at 55%)

So, back in business and Merry Christmas to all....
