Got the Ultra Mac Studio in - here it is next to the 7.1 Mac Pro.

From working with it so far, it's a beautiful little machine, tons of power. Doesn't feel much faster on the every day use side of things, perhaps apps open a faster, but not too noticeable vs the Mac Pro.

Just did some R3d raw files, have not timed them yet - but "seat of the pants" feels slower than my 28 core, W6800x Duo Mac Pro with similar files I've done.

Still, very impressive! Plan to do tests and comparisons

Really keen to see realtime playback comparisons (of heavy grades, on various raw/video formats) in Davinci Resolve. That's been the main area that the M1 Max has lagged behind 7,1 performance.

So far, a quick tes with 4k r3d raw, the W6800x Duo Mac Pro wins with 3 min 14 secs vs 8 min 11 sec on the 48 core GPU Mac Studio Ultra in an export with Final Cut.

Stabilize is also twice as fast on the Mac Pro.

You'd have to use Pro Res in some flavor to see the Mac Studio beating the Mac Pro at this point, or codecs like H264/h265

With Red decoding/decompression optimised for Metal, it makes sense that the beefier GPUs will provide an edge in performance.

Did you notice any appreciable difference when working in the timeline?

I’ve seen one video (that again was looking at Redcode) and the Ultra seemed to be getting bogged down where I know my 7,1 is pretty cruisey.

It’ll be interesting to figure out exactly which codecs the each machine excels with. I do wonder if it’s only the media-engine codecs (Prores/H264/H265) that the ultra can really handle smoothly.

The problem that I see with specialized cores like M1 has for example with H264 decoders etc, is that with general computing tasks such as rendering in After Effects etc, it won't be able to do what it does best. However, in general things like Editing they do come in handy.

It's a way to get around the fact that moore's law is dead (or dying) I think. I agree though, when compared to pure compute applications the speedups aren't that impressive

Nice! Looking forward to your comparison video vs your 28-core Mac Pro
