$799 - 2011 Mac Mini - Anyone else with Sleep issues...

I've resorted to the PleaseSleep utility until fixed as I assume it is a Lion bug.

Anyone else ?

Mine is very inconsistent.

Sometimes it will sleep when the inactivity timer hits, sometimes it won't.

Are there any logs or commands I can run to determine what apps or anything is preventing sleep ?

Should I return the Mini, defective ?

Just checking on everyone else.....

both my 2008 ones do this. they never go to sleep with the timer and even if I manually put it to sleep it is usually not asleep in the morning.

Same problem

I have the same problem with my 2011 mac mini. The mini is connected via HDMI to a HDTV and the sleep timer won't put the mini to sleep. The sleep timer only shuts off the video signal to the HDTV, not the mini itself.

I have turned off all sharing, and tried resetting the SMC and PRAM and NVRAM according to apple support documentation. But no dice. Simply won't go to sleep (flashing power light).

However, I can put the mini to sleep using the sleep scheduler or by putting sleep via the apple drop-down menu.

All remedies I've found via google aren't working. Anyone find a fix for this? Is it just a bug in Lion?

Same problem here with a 27" iMac that won't sleep with inactivity. OTOH, an older 24" iMac does. My minis all still run SL and I have no reason to upgrade them since they are used as dedicated servers.

I was planning on leaving feedback on this http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html like I've done for many other bugs, but I think I will give AppleCare a go first.


Edited to add that I just checked my MacBook. It won't sleep with inactivity either, now. So it's to the feedback page! Everyone, please join in.

My 2011 mini has had no problems at all (using Lion) ... in fact, it's the first mac I've owned in a long time that not only sleeps when it's supposed to but also manages to sleep when the Cintiq is connected (when the display went to sleep, the Cintiq would trigger a usb event that would wake the computer back up).

I have the opposite problem, the OWC Mercury Pro SSD has known glitch that after Mini initiated sleep, I can't get OUT of sleep - only beachball.
Sending the SSD drive back today.

Tried PleaseSleep like the OP mentioned and it looks like it will solve the problem until Apple fixes it.

Without PleaseSleep there are no system messages at all for sleeping. It's as thought there is no process running to shut the system down.

How old is the drive? Did you try updating the firmware? I had this issue too until I updated the firmware and that seem to solve the issue.

The newer 6gb/s OWC SSD Mercury Electra doesn't have this issue as that is what I am running in my Mac Mini server. Sleeps and wakes up just fine.

When you really dig on OWC site, the sleep problem cannot be remedied by firmware update (only the hibernation one which is not relevant to me).
Bought in January before they implemented "physical parameter change" so I have to send the drive back to OWC for "review". Zapping PRAM was no help.

That is so strange as it did fix mine, but maybe I don't have one that has the same issue. I would find that I'd get the beach ball when it came out of sleep and then I'd have to shut it down. I then ran the firmware update and this issue went away.

I did read that some of these drives did have to be sent back to have them do some other type upgrade to it that only they could do or they would just swap it out all together.

Anyway thanks for the info and I hope you get your lined out quickly. I am sure liking the brand new OWC Mercury Electra 6gb/s 120GB which I installed in my Mac Mini Server.

I have since repurposed my older Mercury Extreme Pro to my 2009 MacBook Pro and it continues to perform without issue.

There probably is such a fix, but we'll have to wait for Apple to provide it. Meanwhile PleaseSleep seems to work fine.

I have this problem on my 2011 Mac mini as well. Sleeps fine when I force it via Lion or power button. Doesn't sleep on the timer. From what I have read, people want to pin it on an app that has "activity" that resets the timer...I am not sure how to determine whether that is the case or not...

Has anyone out there or in the later posts to this thread spoken to Apple about the issue and confirmed it is a bug or what the source really is?

This is not the case, at least for me. PleaseSleep uses the sleep timer, works, and therefore the timer isn't being reset. What is wrong is that Lion seems incapable of forcing sleep on its own. This seems to be a very prevalent problem.

I've reported the problem on Apple's feedback page, http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html and urge everyone to do this as well for this and any other observed problems. I'm happy with PleaseSleep in the interim and will wait for Apple's fix.

I also have found sleep to be a weak function on my older mac minis.

Sometimes checking to see all the programs running, esp at auto at startup can help. this is what apple support had me check on my 09 that had sleep and shut down issues. not sure if it helped mine, but there was a program auto running that I do not use.

I was having a sleep issue with my 2009 2.0 GHz Mac-Mini where it would not wake from sleep, when accessed via file sharing or screen sharing, if it were asleep more then 2 hours. I tried everything including resetting PRAM, resetting SMC, power down/up my airport extreme base stations and my mac computers, using 10.7.0, 10.7.1, running from safe mode, running only from a newly created test user.

I use screen sharing because the Mac-Mini is hooked to a 50" Plasma TV and used as media computer. The other day I decided to try screen sharing via VNC on my iPad. The Mac-Mini had been asleep for several days. I was not expecting the iPad to be able to wake the Mac-Mini as it would not wake for my other Mac computers in my house. I was surprised to find that the Mac-Mini did wake for a VNC access. Now the issue seems to have been resolved. I can now wake the Mac-Mini from all my other Mac computers, using file sharing and screen sharing even after the Mac-Mini has been asleep for days at a time. I am keeping an eye on this to make sure that the issue does not happen again.

By the way, I leave XBMC running on the Mac-Mini all the time and my Mac-Mini has no issue going to sleep.

Update: It seems the issue has re-occurred. This morning I went to access my Mac-Mini using file sharing and it won't wake. VNC would not even wake it. I do have a case opened with AppleCare so I will continue to persue that avenue.

With Snow Leopard I used to have the issue where the Mac-Mini would not sleep, now I have the opposite issue happening with Lion.
