8.5GB for iOS?

I know iOS isn't really 8.5gb but where has it gone? Nearly 15% of my 64GB has just vanished.

Just added your used and available together and it gives around the same in total for the capacity available.

Well, 64 GB is only actually 59.6 GB of real space to begin with. So sounds like about 4 GB there might be iOS and related reserved space, given that most people with 64 GB iPhones seem to have about 55.5 GB listed as the capacity.

Back in the days of iOS 4, a 16GB device would have a max usable capacity of 14.3GB. But yes, my 64GB device also has a max capacity of 55.7GB.

Just a few years before that a good majority of the phones couldn't even email or do too much beyond calling, texting, and maybe (fairly bad) photos/vidoeos.

What's your point? Mine is that iOS now takes up way too much space. Android's ROMs are about 400MB(With essential gapps)
I could honestly do without stocks, podcasts, compass, voice memos, iBooks, FmF, Health, news and most importantly- TIPS. And these are apps that don't really affect iOS functionally.
Sure, I'd probably download some of them, but I don't like them built-in. That's an easy Gigabyte- right there. And it's a gigabyte that we could use.

I think you're way overestimating how much storage those stock built-in apps take up.

I'm really not. Some of these apps were standalones previously. So there's a good estimate about their sizes. And depending on the complexity of the other apps, I ranged it from about 60MB to about 200. Plus apple's never been one for taking storage space into account. I seriously doubt that a company that can't find a good performance/aesthetics ratio will find a features/storage ratio. So yeah, I think if they put the effort in the next build to return our storage(Cook promised), we can recover 1 gigabyte.

I doubt any of the stock apps are close to 200mb. More in the 50-100mb range with some maybe being less. Like Tips for example. I doubt that is above 5mb.

I also don't think Android uses 400mb like you say (maybe some super stripped down custom version. But that isn't stock or what comes on any phone.) From what I've read is that 5.0 Lolipop takes up nearly 5GB. That's more than iOS by quite a bit. And I'm sure 6.0 isn't a whole lot better.

Android with fundamental Google Apps is ~400MB. Samsung and other OEMs add both Google's and their own versions of the same apps that brings it up to about that much. And I do stress fundamental, because if a phone shipped with ALL of Google's apps, you'd be correct. But that'd bring it to only about 1GB, which still shames iOS 9, which, while it took a 1.68GB download, still reduced maximum capacity by about 200MB vs iOS 8.
