8 Gb RAM in current model iMac???

I heard this from someone else in this forum yesterday, it would interesting to know if you can put 8GB in the iMac. The bigger question is, even if you can put 8GB in the iMac, can you use it all? I know I have seen some Mac Minis that claim to have 4GB of ram, and the profiler even says it does, but it can only use 3GB of the ram.

You could have checked with the people on the same thread instead of making a new one.

From what they said it works, so I will be grabbing a pair when they become available to put in my MBP.

Has anybody tried this out with the current model iMac? Since it also run's a current motherboard chipset I guess this should be possible...

Yes, it should work in both the iMac and MacBook, provided Apple has not disabled the EFI (firmware) of the chipsets (like they did with the first iterations of the Intel MacBook, iMac and Mini).

That issue is specific to the Mini because it uses the Calistoga chipset, which has a 32-bit memory controller. The Santa Rosa chipset is 64-bit and can support up to 8 gb of RAM according to Intel's white paper.

Well that answers my question. I didn't realize the Mac Mini controller was 32bit . . . guess I should have. Its will be interesting to see if the iMac can hold 8GB of ram. I have a few friends that will be really exicted about that.

Well, what I have gathered from those threads was, that they can CONFIRM this for the MBP, regarding the iMac they expect that it SHOULD work. :confused:

My question now is, has anybody clear confirmation for the iMac?
This seems to me the right forum for such a question....
 
Perhaps 8GB will work...

I was all set to buy my girlfriend an iMac but decided to hold off for the next generation. I use a 8 core 3.2GHz Mac Pro with 16 GB of ram. For what I do, it seems that 8GB is the magic number for memory. This is what I want in a latop--although 6GB would be damn close, and I'd like the same thing in her iMac as well.

If I do buy one for her, you may rest assured I'll pop GB of Ram into it and try it out. I have a rare disease that compels me to max out every computer I own. It has been hard fighting down the urge to up another 16 GB or Ram in my Mac Pro when I've never had a Page Out!
