Pardon me if this is a stupid question, I could be making this more difficult than it is.

I am thinking about adding an Apple TV to my basement HT room. My iTunes library is stored in a 2.8e iMac in the living room, directly above the HT room. Also in the HT room is an old PC, wired with 10-base-t to an Airport Express (802.11g) which in turn talks to an Airport Extreme upstairs. Also, the aforementioned iMac also talks to the Airport Extreme for internet. My wife's macbook (older, 802.11g) also talks to the Airport Extreme.

Sooooo, my question is- will the Apple TV and iMac talk to each other over 802.11n speed, or will the presence of slower protocol devices somehow muck things up? I remember reading that the speed of the Airport Extreme is reduced for "n" communication when "g" devices are present.

Thanks for wading through my mess, appreciate any help you may have.

...so no one is running :apple:TV in a mixed network?:(

Is your AE setup as a range extender, just an AirTunes node or a separate wireless network? You say it is wired to a PC and that confuses me a bit.

Even if your network slows all the way down to "g" speeds, as long as there is a good connection, you should be OK. I can stream movies fine on a "g" only network.

Hi BB, THANKS for the reply!

Yeah, essentially the AE is an "extender", as my basement PC has no wireless capability, and I just cable between its NIC and the AE.

I wouldn't be adverse to temporarily shutting down all non N devices should I need the bandwidth, but from what you say maybe I'm worrying about nothing.

I have no problems with a G network and my Apple TV. The initial sync WILL take time. Daily updates go very quickly. An album worth of mp3s is synced in minutes.

Some users connect their Apple TV using an ethernet cable for the initial sync and then move the Apple TV to another location.

I believe you can run the new Extreme-n in the 5GHz band and the "g" devices in the 2.4GHz band.

Just to add to what others have said: My Airport Extreme network runs at G speeds, and I have no problems with my :apple:TV, either synching or streaming. It would sync faster at N speeds, obviously, but even streaming at G speeds works just great, with hardly any buffering lag.

Thanks to all of you guys. Look forward to seeing how this works firsthand. I have about 50 2gb H.264 movies ready to go, and of course, the "tethered" sync makes a lot of sense for the initial transfer.

Like your handle, assume it is Adams-esque, Sandman. Fwiw, I live in Bellingham and bought my :apple:TV from a fellow in Bellevue.
