iPod 80gb Ipod Classic Overheated Battery

I have an 80gb Ipod Classic which I've had for 14 months. I always charge it through the USB 2.0 port on my Imac. Today I was working on the computer and a window popped up saying the device I had just disconnected may lose info ( I had NOT disconnected anything ). I went to Itunes and my Ipod was not showing up , so I picked it up. It was so hot it burned my thumb. I turned it over and noticed the screen looked as if it was melting. I let it cool down for a few hours and simultaneously searched for clues. Found next to nothing.
After it cooled down I tried to check it and it's dead, but the screen seems to fine. I did not buy Applecare, so I'm on my own. I use it when I'm working and cannot face the possibility of not having it, but the wife will never let me buy another.
My question is this , is it just the battery or will I need to replace all sorts of junk once I pry it open?

call applecare first. see if there was anything wrong with your batch of ipods. you might get it replaced for free.
 
Good Idea , thank you , I'll try it.
I did find a few sites that sell batteries , one site that sells a toolkit and battery together. I may just try replacing it myself if I cannot get any satisfaction from Apple.
My still unasked and therefore unanswered question is , without a new battery , is there a methodology for determining whether any damage extends to components ie: hard drive and/or switches?
 
Apple is replacing it

I called Applecare, and took the speak to a live person option , waited a while and spoke to a guy called Naveen from someplace on the other side of the world. He stopped me as soon as I told him about the heat and set me up with another guy , Mark , in Minnesota , who listened, asked a few questions and said Apple will replace it for me!!!!!!!
I never would have called , because it's out of warranty, if it had not been suggested here.
