$84.95: Battery Replacement Program

Hopefully, the companies that do iPod batteries will jump into this market too. Their charges for replacing iPod batteries are ~50% of Apple's, and even less when you DIY. So hopefully options like that will be out in due time. No one's even going to need a new battery on their iPhone for some time.
 
The battery should be easy, user replaceable.

IMO they pushed it extremely with the iPod. These are not disposable products. This is a phone Apple. $85 for a new battery is absolute insanity and no wording from Apple or fanboys can get around that fact.

But yes, 3rd party providers will be onto it.
 
Simply criminal. I suppose they expect you to drop the $85 after you drop $60 for AppleCare. Not bad, $60 Apple tax for year 2, $85 for year 3.

By year 3, your contract will be up, there will be new iPhones, almost certainly lower prices on them, and a good chance that battery replacements for them will be cheaper too.
 
It's funny how people think they're still going to be using their iPhone in 3 three years.

I'll probably decide if I want the AppleCare in a year, and then abuse the crap out of the battery to get a replacement before AC expires. Or I'll just replace it myself, or send it out to one of the companies that will pop up for less. Or just sell it on eBay and get another phone. This all of course is assuming that there is ever a problem while I own it!

yes they can, their argument is

"if you can afford the $600 for the phone and pay ~$80/mo you can afford $85 for a battery"

or

"you only need to replace it every year or 2"

or

" i dont remember the last time i took the battery out of the phone"

what i dont understand is why do you have to pay shipping and then pay $80 on top of that for a batter? the battery cost is around $5 maybe even $7 if its a li-poly. does apple really feel the need to rip off their Customers?

you can get a brand new fully protected battery for $12-$15 SHIPPED incl taxes and duties.

is the battery covered under applecare? (i would be suprised if it is) im pretty sure most companies do not cover consumable items, thats why you see a 90day warranty for batteries and projector lamps

my statement was

- everyphone now has a removable battery except the iphone
- anyphone can have an ext batt pack as you can get those AA packs with the universal adapter on the end (they make one for ipods too)

Every phone now doesn't. There are other slimphones with no panel.
So your point is none. You will not be SOL without battery power with iPhone.
 
Wow...

I wonder how many people have ever even replaced a cell phone battery? I would bet a very small percentage of people have (or purchased a second one).

Way to blow up a rather small non-issue.
 
I don't see what the big issue is here. Ipods have integrated batteries, and they sell like hotcakes. In all the years i've own cell phones (since 97), I have never changed the battery in my phones. By the time the battery is worn down enough where it needs replacement, my phone is pretty beat up and there are newer cooler phones available. I simply get a new phone. Come to thing of it, i've gone through 3 phones since getting my 5g ipod and the ipod is still going strong.

By the time the battery is done for there will be a new iphone, much nicer than this one. Will i pay 85 for a new battery? Nope, I'll be getting a new iphone!
