8800Go in future MBP?

I heard that Nvidia is releasing new 8800 cards for the mobile solutions. Given that AMD now owns ATI, I am wondering how this will effec the relationship between ATI cards and Intel for mac.

I know that Apple uses both, but traditionally Apple uses ATI for its mobile solutions because of the lower power and heat ratings.

Does anyone know, or have any suspiscion that we could see an 8800 in a MBP Santa Rosa laptop or will we be seeing the R600 mobile solution instead.

I highly doubt that the R600 will come to the MBP...that card generates too much heat and sucks a ton of power. Desktop version as of now sucks up 300w. Imagine running a crossfire setup with two of those. Not to mention the desktop version is 11" long.

Its not like AMD is going to make ATI proprietary. They want to make money so they'll make it compatible with intel, if that's what you're stabbing at.

Well ATI is releasing mobile versions of the R600 to replace the X1600 series of mobile cards I believe it will be called the X2300 or something along those lines, the R600 is the chipset name, not the name of the individual graphics chips.

ATI needs to update their cards soon and given that the desktop update is about two weeks away, it is safe too assume that mobile cards will start appearing by late spring/ early summer.

Given the big updates we have seen in the past I expect to see the GPU updated along with Santa Rosa.

There is confusion because the replacement for the X1600 is not the R600.

R600 is probably the X2800 and X2900.

R610/R630? are the X2300 and X2600. I think it's R610 = X2300 and R630 = X2600, but I'd have to check The Inquirer...

Therefore the post that said the R600 and the 8800 will never see the insides of a MBP are entirely valid, and almost undoubtedly true.

As for R600 GENERATION GPUs, it is very likely.

Yes and no. The CD MBP's had their X1600 running underclocked, due to heat issues.

When the C2D chip came out, and ran cooler, Apple decided they could ship the X1600 in the new units, running at full speed.

Wrong!

Core Duo MBP's were EXTREMELY underclocked.
Core 2 Duos were only under clocked 50 or so MHz, or a lot less than the original CD's. I believe only the 17" MBP runs at full speed, ignoring the iMacs.
Of course, you can always clock the GPU's back up to ATI reccommended if you want, although you may void your warranty.

I believe placing any Macbook Pro on your lap without some protection is a bad idea. I believe that's why Apple expressly describes the MBP as a "notebook" and not a "laptop".

I missed it before, but Merom actually has a higher TDP than Yonah. I believe it's only about 3 Watts, but it is there.

Of course, if Apple put an R600 in the MBP, you wouldn't want to touch it at all... 300+W of heat flowing into your fingers would not be fun. Into your legs and groin would be infinitely less fun.
