I've had my 1st gen AirPods Pro since 2020. Yesterday morning, when I went to use them, the left one decided to crap out on me. It just won't connect to my phone at all, even after resetting, setting up again, etc. I took it to the Genius Bar and after all the tests they ran, said the only option was to pay $89 for a replacement. (They've long been out of AppleCare+ coverage)

I'm just wondering what all of you would do in this case? I even asked the worker and she was on the fence. Should I pay for the single replacement or just upgrade to the 2nd gen? I'm bummed this happened suddenly like this since I usually take a lot of care with my tech. Are the new generation a big enough upgrade for the higher price?

I had a similar situation last week (see rattlegate thread) and ruled out paying the $89 replacement fee because mine were already over three years old and the other one could still fail.

Are you able to try the AirPods Pro 2 at the Apple Store? That way, you can better evaluate.

If I were you, I'd shell that $90 towards purchase of the 2nd gen.

If you can find a deal on the AirPods Pro 2 (they are often available for $199) I’d get the new one and keep the old charging case as a spare.

had the same dilemma.

paid €269 for new AP2s. firstly as another poster said, i could have paid to replace and the other one failed the next week. secondly, it gives me a spare 'pair', which is useful for just leaving in the lounge in its case for when i just need to quickly listen to something or make a call, and my main pair are out of sight/reach.

This is exactly what I did. My APP1s got the rattlegate in both and they were both covered, but I did notice that I was beginning to have issues in the right one once more and same as before in the "normal" mode they are good (for the most part and lower volumes), but the moment I switch into noise cancelling or transparency and it just has issues. I just got the APP2 and plan on using the 1st gen as a spare or I may use them for the gym or something

The case for the first gen does not work with the second gen buds.
