iPad Pro 9.7 vs 10.5 for watching movies?

I just got my first iPad, the 5th gen 9.7, which I love coming from years of being a Samsung/Android user. And I'm wondering if I should exchange it for 10.5 to get a bit more screen real estate for watching movies and YouTube videos.

For those that have or had experience with both; 9.7 and 10.5. Is the screen difference in size noticeable ? I only use my iPad for entertainment purpose and web surfing. And for another +$350 I could get another iPad even though I don't need a 2nd iPad.

Ive played with 12.9 iPad and it's great but, it's out of my price range, trying to save up for a MacBook right now.

You are correct, I am price conscious. But I'm also the type of person; save up and spend more on a product that costs more that I will get more out of.
In this particular case though, I have no need for all the extra bells and whistles a 10.5 or 12.9 has to offer. So a simple and cheaper model with larger screen would be my choice.
A tablet, has always been a simple piece of hardware that I use for entertainment purpose.

I have a 5 year old Dell laptop. It's bulky, it's fast and the screen is horrible even by 2012 standards. So I only use it when I need access to physical keyboard and none mobile websites. Other wise I would use it all the time if the screen was half as good as a 2012 MacBook.

Now that I think about it. I'll stick with my 9.7 iPad. For $300, that's the best piece of hardware I have ever bought. And use the money towards a MacBook Pro.

I'm so used to Android devices, that require tweaks, debloating and Rooting just to get the most out of a hardware. It was part of the fun and gave me something to do in my free time. But with iPad.. you turn it On and you use it. It's simple, boring and its something I need to get used to.

10.5 is better - it's not just the size, it's the wide color, better contrast and brightness and has better speakers. However - the main experience is already there on your iPad. Having a thin device to hold in your hands and watch movies in bed or sofa - that's why iPads are great for entertainment and you have that experience already.

So it comes down to this - can you afford an 10.5 upgrade and are you ready to spend that money on it or would you rather have something else for that money? If you can upgrade, you WILL be happy with the new iPad. It's not just the best iPad ever made, it's one of the best Apple devices ever made. BUT - and it's a big but - your current iPad is also great and you have 80-90% of that experience already.

While I do enjoy my 10.5 iPP set up when I'm in the office, the 9.7 iPad will work just fine for movie/tv watching. This picture would be pretty much the same with the 9.7 iPad.
If consumption is your main focus, don't spend the money.

If it's just for watching video I would say it's not worth it.
The screen is noticeably bigger and it is better but I don't think it's a big enough jump to warrant the cost just to watch Netflix on.

I did some thinking and I can't justify spending $350 for slightly larger screen. Ide rather use that money towards MacBook pro 15". I'm trying to be wiser with my purchases.


My current 9.7 is great and will get the job done, I can't ask for a better tablet for the price. Coming from 7" than Samsung 8" tablets with much worse screen quality, the iPad is amazing for price.

I use my 2017 iPP 12.9 mainly for watching iTunes movies/TV shows. If you want to buy an Pro you have to wait till get the biggest one, Trust me it is worthwhile to buy it, So never go for smaller sizes.
By the way How's Google Play movies? I've never tried it, is iTunes better than that? I mean quality and features like iTunes Extra.

I don't use Google play or iTunes for movies. I use an app, not sure if I'm allowed to talk about it openly on the forums.

I agree with your decision. I think the fifth generation 9.7 iPad is more than enough to meet your needs with media and or watching movies.

Alternatively, it's also nice to have a physical keyboard when you need it. And having a second option with a MacBook gives you the diversity of using that for whatever the productivity that might be. I'm also the same way, I enjoy using my iPad when need be, but there are many times where I just want to use my laptop for the sake of having a physical keyboard and It's more efficient for me over the digital keyboard on the iPad.

The IPad is a great device that can do so many things and has expanded over the years, but having a laptop when I want to switch for different tasks, is defintely an advantage for me.

Don't forget promotion, that comes with the 10.5 iPad. Means videos are played with the correct frame rate. Its really amazing and a big plus compared to the 9.7 in my opinion.

What apps support promotion? I haven't noticed a change on Netflix or YouTube.

Is it "pay twice the price of your current model when you're on a budget and you don't need all of the other extra features the Pro line offers" better? No.

What do you mean correct frame rate? Does Netflix offer 24 fps movies or 120 fps videos?
