9to5 claims May 24th as Hulu paid subscription app date

I already have Netflix and that should be enough for me. But it's nice to have that option.

I don't want to pay for Hulu. :p
 
I don't know much on the pricing but I wish it were free, perhaps a paid app and that's it. However, I believe this is a sign that hulu.com on your computer will turn into a paid service.

So the way I'm reading it is the app itself will be a free download, and you can then watch five current tv shows without a subscription, but then if you want the entire catalogue you'll be paying 9.95.

If that is the case, I like the idea some of the content will still be free, although I don't like things costing money on the ipad which are already free on a regular computer.
 
THere are some episodes of shows that netflix doesn't have for streaming so this will be a stop gap.

This with TV out capabilities. It's almost time to the :apple:TV and just use an iPad.

I understand that hulu can't be free forever. There's a nice cash cow right there in advertising alone. Like the iPad paying for Hulu will not be for everyone. If I didn't get my dumbass locked into another 12 month cable contract I'd be all over canceling much of my cable services and moving towards hulu and netflix only.
 
Hulu can be free forever, you said yourself that it's a nice cash cow. The site is making money, maybe they should try and make it better to gain more users and more money via advertising, the same method that is currently making them profitable. Adding a monthly fee will mean less users and less advertising dollars. The question is if the monthly fee will make up for it.

Besides, I don't think it's Hulu's idea to charge. The cable and satellite companies are not happy that their subscribers can get content that they buy from the networks for free directly from the networks themselves. I think Hulu is doing this just to make them happy. But, most people haven't cut the cord yet, I pay TV through comcast, I get TV through netflix, now I'm supposed to pay Hulu? How much per month to how many different people am I supposed to pay for horrible TV shows?

You are right, it's not Hulu's idea to charge. It's the networks wanting to cash in on a good thing.

I wish that other networks would follow suit with ABC. They made the app for the iPad and it's beautiful.
 
They better add a LOT of content to justify the subscription price or this will be an instant fail.
 
I probably wouldn't since NetFlix gets me all I need, but if it was ad free I could see myself doing it.
 
We have been without cable for over 2yrs now.

OTA HD ... ABC, Fox, NBC, CBS
Netflix
:apple:TV

So we watch plenty of stuff. And if we want to watch something "cable" we head to our computers for Hulu.

I am hoping that you only have to pay if you want to watch the older shows. And they better be without commercials.
 
Is there any chance of hulu's resolution quality being as good as high-def digital cable channels? That's the last thing keeping me from ditching my overpriced cable provider. That and I will essentially be bricking my TiVo HD once I turn off the cable.

The question you should be asking yourself is how much longer Hulu will remain free on your regular computer. If it doesn't make sense to you to offer this service free to some and charge others, it probably doesn't make sense to the upper management of Hulu.

Not true ... no cable for 2yrs
Tivo HD (w/ Netflix streaming) + OTA HD networks = cheap goodness.
 
Depending on details, I will probably try this for the first month to see how I like it and watch as many old series as I can in that month!

I suspect you will seen entire catalogs now appearing. Don't make ABC the hero here, their app will have the exact same episodes for free as hulu, they won't be offering catalog stuff for free.

If the app is free or cheap and the stuff that is currently on hulu stays free on iPad, this is an epic WIN. Do you guys ever buy DVD series of TV shows? They are $30 a season or more. An entire year of hulu under this plan would be $120.

Entire year of Hulu = $120 = 1 month of HD Comcast Cable...

So netflix $20/mo + Hulu $10/mo < cable.

We don't watch sports. The only thing we are really missing is Food Network.

The 9to5 article is misleading. This one gives a clearer picture of what's going on.

Hulu pushes forward with $9.95 subscription service


Hulu is rolling out their subscription-based service on May 24. This applies to all hulu users. The five most recent episodes of all current network shows will be free, everything else will require a payed account.

The article only hints that an iPad app might be coming around that time.

The question you should be asking yourself is how much longer Hulu will remain free on your regular computer.
