wow. ok so i was trying to hide my xp partition on the mac side by trying to change the name of the partition on the windows side by adding a "."

i guess i messed up some how and now when i try to view "My Computer" all i see is a flashlight scanning a folder. i can't see anything in "My Computer" what can i do?

the whole xp partition is acting funny...

Sounds like you re-designated the drive, not just renamed it.

what exactly do you mean by re-designating it?

the "My Computer" finally shows up after about 4 minutes of searching

Possible Solution

Optimus, Enable Root User. Go to Mac Help enter enable root user. Follow instructions to enable root. log out and then log back in as root. Once in root You should be able to change the name... Your partition It is still there. Once you have changed the name back startup from Your install cd and run disk utility and verify disk, let the process complete and if needed run repair disk. This should correct any issues with your directory. then reboot from your har drive. Also under root f you need you can correct the partition in terminal but I wouldn't mess with it unless your familiar with Unix.

When you're done recovering your Windows partition, the following will hide your Windows volume from the Mac desktop, while leaving other volumes visible.

(.names are not a good fix)

Run this in a Terminal shell:

sudo SetFile -a V /Volumes/Windows

where Windows is the name of the volume. If you don't recall, just run:

ls /Volumes

to identify the name.

You'll need to restart Finder for this to take effect. You can wait until you next reboot or press Command+Shift+Escape, then highlight Finder and kill it.... or from within your Terminal shell: killall -KILL Finder

Finder will automatically restart.

i give up.... my xp partition is doomed.

i don't know how to fix it.

when i log in, i can run a couple programs and maybe wait 2 minutes BEFORE the windows chimes come in. like the windows start up chimes. the piano. what do i do.

i couldn't enable root user because i couldnt find anything. i tried to verify and repair with my startup disk, that didnt work either.
