I just upgrade my 4,1 from Quad Xeon 2.66 GHz
to Hex i7 970 3.2, And it runs fast

alternative way for 4,1 user that want something really
boost your performance.

That's a good deal on that processor, but it's lowest list price was the same as the W3680 so it isn't like everyone can go out and pick one up for $300.

If someone is searching on eBay they should probably check Core i7 970, 980, 980X, 990X, and Xeon W3670, W3680 and W3690 to find the best deals on a 6-core. The performance differences are minimal even with the 1066MHz memory limitation of the 970, 980 and W3670.
 
So the 4,1 will take a 970? Assumed I'd have to update the firmware to 5,1 first. I shouldn't have sold my 970 now lol. Guess I'd have to buy different memory as well to take advantage of the faster memory speed?

The 970 doesn't support faster memory, but yes you would need to update the firmware.
