Ok, as I wait for the camera kit I've been messing around with the iPad and how it may work with videos I take on my camera. The first problem is both my point and shoot cameras save videos in .AVI format. When I try to sync these videos with iTunes photo transfer you can click the "import video" button. Unfortunately, iTunes ignores .AVI files. If I manually convert the files to .MP4 format, it copies over in the same album as the photos. So importing them on the road to the iPad is out, unless the camera kit works differently than iTunes sync. Second issue is even if you get the video in the gallery, you can't edit it. You get the frame by frame scrubber, but no trim function. Now here's the weird thing. You can email the .AVI video to yourself (if it's small enough to get through your mail server) and you can save the video. It puts the video in the "Saved Photos" album. It plays fine, so the iPad can play .AVI videos. Videos in the "Saved Photos" album can be edited and trimmed, but the problem is the trimmed files your create lose the audio. Very frustrating. I guess the upside is, the whole issue probably can be fixed in software, since everything I actually want to do with camera videos works halfassed in some way or another.
Are there many cameras out there that save their videos in .MP4 format? Everyone I've had seems to save in .AVI format.
