Curiosity finally got the better of me and I decided to bite the bullet and buy myself a pair of AirPods, despite my reservations I was too interested in the 'newness' of the them and the technology involved. My reservations that held me back from buying on release were:
- Audio Quality, everywhere seemed to say they are no better than the EarPods, for the price I felt like better audio should be expected.
- Type of earphone, I've always preferred the full in-ear canal style ear phones that create a full seal, better bass and blocking out of surrounding noise.

I have to say the AirPods have really surprised me. The sheer convenience and 'cool' factor of them really has to be experienced to fully appreciate, the instant pairing and switching of devices is major plus for me. I used to have to fiddle about for ages de-pairing my old bluetooth earphones from my iPhone and switching them over to my apple watch whenever I went to the gym or went running, the AirPods work seamlessly and flawlessly every time with no hassle or any interaction needed, just put them in and off I go.

I am really loving being truly wireless, all the bluetooth earphones I've had before have all had a cable joining the two ears which still got in a way and was an annoyance when running and in the gym. The AirPods are so comfortable that I sometimes worry they might have fallen out without me noticing!

The charging case is something I never really considered when thinking about whether to get them but what a great addition it is, I don't think i'll ever find myself arriving at the gym or heading out for a run and finding that my earphones have no charge (a regular occurrence with all my previous bluetooth earphones).
I also love that by leaving one earphone in the case you can get the full sound range coming through the one earphone, I do this a lot at work as I have to keep one ear free to notice when my work phone is ringing. This is something I didn't realise I was missing until I had it available to me.

All the little things are great, the auto on/off, the auto pausing when you remove one earphone, the tapping to skip/pause etc works really well, saves me having to interact with my watch, they also work great for handsfree calls,

The audio quality is taking some getting used to compared to what I have been using before but to be honest they are such a joy to use that I'm happy to accept the audio quality for what it is, a week and a bit in and I am getting more used to it. My only other mild annoyance is the inability to change volume without using siri. Fortunately having an Apple Watch its easy to do so on that when listening to music, if I had to reach for my phone every time I had to adjust the volume I would find that a really big irritation.

This thread has been a bit of a long old ramble but I thought other Apple users hesitant to invest in the AirPods may be interested to hear bout my experience.

Great impressions. I'm exactly in the same boat as you - intrigued by the seamlessness and "cool factor," but hesitant about the audio quality, especially since I'm not a big fan of the sound of earpods. Debating between the AirPods and Bose SoundSport Wireless.

I just used my AirPods for the first time today with my X, and I was pleasantly surprised with their audio quality. Perhaps my expectations were set to a low standard due to the oftentimes harsh critiques they receive. Used them tonight at the office listening to a variety of different musical genres and I felt they more than delivered. The claims that they sound no better than the standard issue EarPods are patently false in my humble opinion. It's strange to me that anyone would think that.

I brought the Airpods home last December (a day before signing up to Mac Rumours :D ), had my Earpods next to me & swapped them a number of times. Sound quality was noticibly better than the Earpods straight away.

Wondering how others couldn't tell. Maybe they have poor hearing? It stood out for me.

The overall seamless integration & quality + ergonomics make these things the best tech product since my 6S imo.

(Haven't tested the iPhone X yet :D )

I agree, one of the first things I thought to myself was 'this is one of the most innovative products i've used in a long time'.

The sound quality is definitely better. A wider soundstage with more distinct lows, mids and highs. People who say they sound the same as the stock EarPods are wrong.

I have had the airpods for several months. First with my 7 and now with my X. They actually sound a little better with the X. I will never go back to wired ones.

They sound better with the X? There’s nothing different as far as DAC in the X.

If someone would have told me a week ago that i'm now seriously considering buying the airpods i would call that person crazy.

just on friday and simply out of curiosity i tried them out at my local apple store for about half an hour. and i must say that they impressed me a lot. the convenience and comfort that comes from the fact that they are completely wireless is amazing. furthermore, the airpods seem to fit into my ears better than the earpods which is strange as they are the exact same shape, right? anyways, i stopped feeling them after a few minutes.
i wouldn't call myself an audiophile at all, but i was more than happy with the audio quality - they sound "fun" and at about 70%-80% volume i stopped hearing all the racket in the store.
well, and last but not least, the "dental floss dispenser" aka the charging box is another big plus.

all in all it feels like a well thought through and innovative product.

I just went into Best Buy and tried the Bose Soundlink 2 headphones which have the exact same drivers as the QC35 Bose without active noise cancellation. The QC35 are $349. The Soundlink 2 are $229. I thought the Bose would be way better than the AirPods. I listened to several different songs on both the Bose and the AirPods in the store and I was surprised, minus the noise cancellation, the sound quality of the Bose wasn’t that much better than the AirPods. Thesoundstage on the AirPods is quite impressive. The form factor and ease of use makes it a hands down winner in my book. Well done Apple. Well done.

I just bought some AirPods, along with an iPhone X and Apple Watch 3. I know many will call me mad, but they are the best purchase of the lot. They just work and they’re super comfy. I love how quick they connect.

An excellent purchase.

I thought it was just me! I too thought the sound quality was better when paired with my new iPhone x than it was when paired with my iPhone 7. Doesn't seem to make sense but I thought exactly the same thing.

That's more a reflection on how crap modern Bose products are tbh. the AirPods soundstage is muted as always, bass heavy and constrained at the top - They're made for use on the go, they're not designed to have an expansive or neutral soundstage.

Well the X does support BT 5.0, but that shouldn't make a difference as the Airpods only support BT 4.2.

Interesting.

I've noticed a bug with YouTube & wondering if others have also...Play/Pause tap gesture will pause but won't resume play. Removing Airpod & reinserting resumes play however.

Resume tap gesture works for music, but not YouTube (nor videos stored on phone I've also just discovered - neither Play/Pause works here)..

Anyone else?

They sound better then my Plantronics Backbeat Fit. After using the AirPods for 2 days straight and using them a lot, going back to the Backbeat Fit was a sound downgrade.

I have the Soundlink 2's and I have to disagree. I find the Soundlink 2 to be superior.

Yes I found the same.
