I searched for Omniweb, and I didn't get too many hits so maybe we can start this thread up for discussing this new release. So I'm writing this post from Omniweb. My computer is not too fast. It's an iBook G3 700 w/ 640mb of RAM, but especially after today's Safari update, Omniweb seems quite slow.

I like the "workspace" drawer to the left in contrast to safari's tabs.To be honest, i think they are overhyped. What's the difference here except we get to see a picture of the website rather than a tab with its name? not a big deal to me.

Overall, Omniweb is not that fast of a web page loader compared to Safari or any of the mozilla based browsers (camino, firebird, etc)

Perhaps the best thing about Omniweb is that if you buy it, it's yours. When Apple updates the OS, it'll still work. It isn't like Apple not giving the 1.2 update to jaguar owners.

Well so in sum, I think Omniweb 5 looks good, but I'm underwhelmed and while it is beta software, there will have to be massive speed improvements before I consider it over Safari. Now if you excuse me i'm going to close omniweb and revisit this thread on Safari. Oh yeah and I like Camino a lot, but mainly due to UI, I prefer Safari, even though camino's a smidge faster.

Firebird

You don't mention Mozilla Firebird, except in a note - that's where most of the Mozilla development effort is being directed, even on the Mac. Camino is nice for its OS X integration, but it's sorely lacking in a lot of ways compared to Firebird.

Having said that - I'm giving the new Safari 1.2 a go as my default browser. We'll see how it goes. In the past I've always ended up back at Firebird. Safari is generally quite fast rendering pages, but on occasion (with the last version) I'd run into pages that it seemed to choke on.

Only been playing with OmniWeb Beta for a few hours but I'm loving it so far. Once it is ironed out it will definitely become my default browser. I always loved everything from Omni Group. I never used OmniWeb for the speed, I used it for it's elegance and it's features. The same we use our slow Macs (G5 owners aside) not for speed, but for the better experience. I think it will speed up a lot as well. Unless, Apple pull a rabbit out of their hat with Safari 2.0 I can't see ever leaving OmniWeb.
