A Few beginner's questions

I've got a few questions:

1. Is their something like a Itunes Miniplayer that stays on your desktop all the time?
With Itunes for XP when you press CTRL-M it switches the main itunes window to a smaller player that stays on top of all other windows while working on your pc

2. When I close the display of my powerbook it automatically goes to sleep. Is there a way to change this so that the powerbook keeps working even when the display is closed?

3. In Finder, when you want so select a bunch of files from e.g. the third file up all the way down to the last one. Is there a way to do this on a pwerbook?
On a desktop model I would use shift+end to do this, but hence there's no end or begin button...

4. Last one..: in Finder when I press enter it gives me the option to change the name of the file. I'm used to a windowssystem where, when you press enter it opens the file?
is there a keyboardshortcut for opening files? Or can I change the meaning of the enter-button?

1. The same functionality exists in the OS X version of iTunes.

2. I don't own a Powerbook, so I don't know, but chances are, if you look in your Settings > Power Management / Options, there may be a setting to not put it to sleep when the lid is closed.

3. Don't know.

4. Would like to know.

1) iTunes works the same on Mac as it does Windows, just use Apple instead of Ctrl. You might have to go into the prefernces to make it float on top though, don't remember what is default.

2) Yes, but you have to connect at least an external keyboard, possibly a monitor as well.

3) Not sure. If you click on one, then hold shift and click on another file it will select all files in between. Not the same but faster than idevidual selection.

4) Apple-o. If you go into system preferences under keyboard and mouse there is a section for keyboard shortcuts. There you can view what is available as well as change some or make your own.

On a Powerbook keyboard, there is a function key. To go to the end, hold down the Function key (on the lower left, IIRC.. I'm not at my powerbook) and press the right arrow.. the one labelled with "end" under the arrow in tiny grey letters.

Hold down shift and do all that.

thanks for the itunes one, just found it

it's the zoom-option.. strange name.. but well.. it works


the keyboard shortcut idea doesn't work, it doen't even mention the enter/return key..

edit: cool, I was wondering what that button was supposed to do..

1. When iTunes is launched, if you press the green button in the top left, it will go to a mini player. If you press the green button again, it will go back to the regular sized iTunes player.

2. If you have the AC Adapter plugged in and have a keyboard, mouse, and display plugged in, you can use it with the lid closed. It will go to sleep when you close the lid, but you should be able to wake it up with the lid closed if the keyboard, mouse and display are plugged into it.

3. On a Mac, if you hold the shift key while selecting it will select everything in between. If you hold the command (apple) key down, you can select whatever you want and it won't select things in between.

4. If you press Apple-o it will open whatever is selected (files/folders). Apple C is copy, Apple V is paste, Apple X is cut (same as Windows, just use the Apple key instead of the control key).

Feel free to ask any other questions here... Welcome to the Macintosh platform!!!! Just be patient, and remember its NOT Windows, so its not going to operate like Windows. Almost anything you can do in the Windows OS itself, you can do in OS X in some way shape, or form.

well..

Fn + arrow up or down = page up/down
Apple + arrow up or down = begin/end
Fn+ arrow left/right = begin/end

so now I have two ways to do the same thing...

Generally, I think the fn key works. But in finder, it never works for me. Option seems to replace it. Don't know if some setting on my PB changed or what. I'll give a little *shrug* with ya.

If you close the lid on the PB without an external display, then how are you going to see what you're doing? Unless you want to remote it?

No, you cannot change the function of the return/enter keys. Its an Apple specific thing that you'll have to get used to. Like I said, its not Windows, so its not going to operate like Windows.

Be careful when closing the PB lid and working with it like that. If it gets too hot, you might damage the screen. I know this is definitely the case with the iBook, which vents heat through the keyboard, but the PB has better venting. However, it still gets hot, and keeping the screen that close to a hot machine could damage it for you.

well... there are some program's which require that you're pc is on for a looong time and stays connected to the internet etc..
so that's why i want it to stay working even while the lid is closed.

but on the other hand.. I just saw you can setup you're screen that it turns black/shuts off after x minutes, so same effect

dark screen means no light means easier to sleep

The PB is designed to work in clamshell mode, so I wouldn't worry too much about heat damage.

Picture Thumbs

Not trying to jack the thread, but I've got a newb question myself. So here goes... when I upload pictures at a site like imageshack, I go to the page and select "browse" to find the picture on my PB that I want to load. However, the window that comes up only contains the second two viewing options in the finder window (list, or path-name type view). Is there a way to make it so that this window displays a "preview" or "thumb" of the pictures in the folder (as opposed to just the name). I can't always remember which picture is saved under which name, and it can be a hassle to have two windows open at the same time (finder window displaying preview and safari window to select the pic I want to upload...) Any suggestions?

there is a way to turn on thumbnails instead of the file icon, give me a sec and I'll try to find the right menu...

or try using the column view instead of icon or listview?

right or ctrl-click on the desktop
select: show view options
select the: show icon preview optionclose the menu

normally you're icons are now little previews/thumbnails of the actual picture

Its not being anal, its very rude and improper to hijack someone else's problem with your own, whether you think its relevant or not. Plus it also makes it harder for someone else to reference back to your problem. Other people do search for problems in the forum before posting you know...
