So I came back from a few days away and found that iTunes match had gone live where I am (Switzerland), so went to the mini that has the fullest version of my library and activated match, then let it get on with its thing. I came back after it was done, and everything was fine. I then turned on match on my other computers/iOS devices and all seems well. I am, however left with a few questions that perhaps the good folks here can answer.

1) how do I find out whether a particular song is matched or just uploaded (or a list of the matched songs and a list of the uploaded ones)

2) for matched songs, how do I upgrade them from whatever lower bit-rate version they are currently at up to 256k?

3) if I go to the iCloud pane in System Preferences, it says my iCloud storage is still almost entirely empty, yet when I was matching a bunch of songs definitely were uploaded (I have a few obscure songs in there and a few recordings of songs that I made with friends that are definitely unmatchable, so they must have been uploaded). What gives?

2) you need to delete your local copies. Or I would start iTunes with a new profile. Hold the option key when starting iTunes

3) uploads do not count towards iCloud storage space

Thanks for the quick reply. I am a little reluctant to go down this route because my library also contains a lot of non-music stuff that I don't really want to lose the meta-data for (mainly movies). Is there an easy way to get around this? I guess I'll have a play around after work and see what happens (thank you time machine!)

Cool, I had assumed they did.

Yes it can - however you will need to delete the original file (after iTunes Match have gone through its matching process) the and re-download from iCloud to get the DRM free version. However before you do this

1. backup your iTunes library first

2. When you delete the iTunes Plus file make sure the option to also delete from iCloud is checked off

MacWorld have a nice guide on how to easily replace lower bit rate / and or DRM tracks with iTunes match
