Hi there,

I'm trying to jailbreak and unlock an iPhone 3G from a friend of mine but I've come across a few problems. It is currently running 3.0 (7A341) and has a modem firmware of 05.11.07.

I used redsn0w to jailbreak it. Seemed to work except when I try to open Cydia it just crashes upon opening. How do I get Cydia to work and how can I unlock the phone (if possible)? I'd obviously want to do these at the highest possible firmware.

Thanks in advance,

If you're sure it's a 3G (not a 3GS) you might as well do a clean restore to firmware to 3.1.2 (NOT 3.1.3 -- that cannot be unlocked). Then use redsn0w 0.9.3 to jailbreak. Then install blacksn0w to unlock. Be aware that your friend may encounter Wi-Fi problems with blacksn0w. Resetting network settings should eventually fix them.

Thanks a lot, so just to confirm. I just have to download the 3.1.2 firmware, option click on restore, then restore. Jailbreak with redsn0w then unlock with blacksn0w?

What are the potential problems with Wi-Fi?

And out of curiosity do you have any idea why Cydia wasn't working?

Thanks again,

Since the phone is on baseband 5.11.xx but firmware 3.0, the phone has been previously upgraded to 3.1 or 3.1.2 as it has the 5.11.xx baseband. Someone then downgraded the firmware to 3.0 (baseband cannot be downgraded except by rare Fuzzyband exception)

Perhaps during those upgrades and downgrades, the phone was restored to backup instead of set up as new.

I always recommend choosing set up as new as that prevents any old JB problems from migrating into the new firmware/JB. Perhaps why there are issues with Cydia ?

As thelatinest stated, download official Apple IPSW 3.1.2 and restore, set up as new, then use Redsn0w to JB. Your only unlock option is Blacksn0w but it does come with the possibility of issues.

Hackintosh will have a good tutorial for 3G restoring and jailbreaking.

Thanks again, just jailbroke then ran blacksn0w. Only thing is blacksn0w hasn't appeared to do anything, I then read that I should've actually blacksn0wed first then jailbreak. Is this so?

No, always JB first, unlock via Cydia next.

Don't you have an unofficial sim to put in the phone. If you're not using an unofficial sim, no reason to unlock. If the unlock was successful, the sim should work. You won't "see" any difference.

I put an unofficial SIM in and it didn't register, so I don't know what happened. Anyway, I just restored again and ran blackra1n which jailbroke the iPhone, then just unlocked via the blackra1n app on the Springboard.

My friend is really happy now so thanks a lot!

What are the potential problems with Wi-Fi?

The phone may periodically lose WiFi connectivity. No WiFi networks will appear in Available Networks, and he will not be able to connect to any network by entering it manually. This problem can usually be fixed by some combination of resetting network settings, turning Airplane Mode on and then off, and rebooting. Repeat those steps until it starts registering WiFi networks. Nobody is sure why this happens for some (10-20%) people and not others. Geohot has concluded that blacksn0w is exacerbating a known bug in commcenter, and that there is nothing he can do to fix it.
