I just helped my switcher friend set up her new 15" Powerbook (which looks amazing, I was very envious). The switch mostly went over without a hitch (thank God for my iPod - I don't think it could've been any easier, especially with iTunes - I just dragged the "iTunes" folder from "My Music" in Windows XP onto my 'Pod and then into the "Music" folder in Mac OSX and boom - all playlists, play counts!). I was also incredibly impressed with how well the Airport card worked - no set-up, no confusingness, just opened Safari and it was already going. And (thankfully) we were dead/stuck pixel free.
That being said, she did have a few questions (she's a little intimidated by these forums, doesn't want to be seen as a "Mac Geek", even though I know she'll totally become one):
1. It seems the red close "traffic light" button/widget at the top of windows doesn't actually close them, just hides the window, yet if you click on their icon in the dock, they're still open. Besides cmd-q or the App menu -> Quit, is there a way to close the program via this button? Otherwise what's the point in having a minimize button?
2. Sherlock was a big hit. Do you know of where/if I could score a lyrics or Internet Movie Database channel? Or a Canadianized movie or phonebook channel? Anyone have any other really useful channel suggestions?
3. How stable is Poisoned, since it hasn't reached 1.0 yet? She's wary to install any more "beta" programs, but has anyone actually had huge issues with it?
4. Any fun games (Minesweeper, Space Invaders, Snake) that you can suggest? I found a lot on VersionTracker, but have you tried out any of them?
I think that's it, I'll post any others as they arrive. For the record, I haven't switched to a Mac yet (holding off to see if iMac G5s make an appearance at WWDC) but have spent quite some time using Macs in Apple Stores and reading up on them.
