A few questions from a switcher

I recently purchased a used PowerMac G4 to test the waters and so far i am loving it. However, I have a few questions that I do not have the patience to stumble upon the answer!

First, how in the heck do I do the print screen command! I am used to when I want to take a screen image of an item I just hit alt-print screen on my PC keyboard. How can I do this on my Apple?

Where/what is the equivalent Paint program for Apple. When I am making my powerpoint presentations for work, I often use paint to touch up some things.

iTunes. If I bring in an MP3 that I did not buy from the music store, will I get in trouble? I actually ripped the song off of a CD I own to have it on my computer. I have no intention of sharing it. I am not going to get in trouble am I?

don't really know about the first two, but you will not get in trouble for that on itunes. rip anything you want. rip as much as you want. listen to it all, and be happy and worry-free.

Ah Ha! I figured out how to take a screen shot using Grab. Pretty cool, I can take different types of screen shots. I am so loving it!

To take a screen capture, hold down: command-shift-3.

Paint program: I would recommend something like Graphic Converter. Maybe someone else knows of a program that would better suit you.

iTunes: You can't really get in trouble for having songs on your computer. The only things you can *potentially* get in trouble for is sharing your songs. But ripping songs that you own to play them on your comptuer is entirely legal.

As to the first question about screen shots, Apple+Shift+3 puts a picture of the window that is currently active on your desktop and calls it "Picture 1" or 2 or so on. Apple+Shift+4 changes your curser to a crosshair and puts a picture on your desktop of whatever you click and drag over. If your sound is turned on you will hear something that sounds like a camera shutter when you let off your mouse after click and draging over your subject material in the latter example. Hope this helps...

alt + cmd + shift + 3 = screenshoot to clipboard

alt + cmd + shift + 4 - selection to clipboard

A smart thing to do if you want to know, but don't, search for it in the Help file!

apple-shift-4 followed by a space allows it to take a different type of selection. Well a highlighted one. So where your mouse is over, be it a window, the dock, etc etc.

It is perfectly legal to rip a CD to your hard disk as an MP3 or AAC file, provided you have actually purchased or otherwise legally obtained (i.e. recieved a CD as a gift) a legal copy of the material in question.

Sen. Brownback (R-Kan.) has introduced legislation amending the DMCA to require the RIAA to file a "John Doe" lawsuit to gain the personally identifying information of a suspected copyright violator. The item of most interest to me, however, is the fact that Brownback specifically says that ripping MP3s from CDs you own is a perfectly legal action.
