A few times an hour my external DVD checks

I've got an external DVD drive that I hooked up to my iMac about a week ago.

Since then, I've noticed a few times an hour, the drive fires up as if something is testing to see if a disc is present.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this or what would be good way to forge ahead troubleshooting the issue?

Mine does the same thing. Why bother troubleshooting? I suspect it's normal.
