A Free Way To Tag Your Videos!

I just tried this tonight and it works great!

Check it out. It comes with a stand-alone app that can tag files and when you click Apply, it automatically updates in iTunes within SECONDS. It does NOT re-write the file, so therefore there's no chance of screwing up the file. It doesn't get artwork but, that's easy enough to add manually from in iTunes. Wow, this is an excellent App. It seems to be off the radar since everyone is all for MetaX (Which doesn't work for me, I have no idea what I'm doing wrong but, when I click write, it does stuff and then tells me it's done but, nothing has changed in iTunes, so I have no idea what it's actually writing).

Anyways, this is a great little App! Try it out please.

Oh, by the way, don't launch it using the Script menu in iTunes... it will just freeze iTunes. You can launch it manually from your hard drive (Applications folder or wherever you like). It's called "Make Video Tags.app" and it's stand-alone but, directly interacts with iTunes so updates happen instantly in iTunes... no need to re-import the video after the tags are done.

You can also open video files that will automatically add to iTunes and tag them at the same time.

If it doesn't re-write the file (like MetaX) then if your iTunes library crashed or you wanted to transfer all your media to a new iTunes library then it won't have any tags.

I'd urge you to use MetaX to tag files. It will search for tags too, to save you doing it all.

About your problem with MetaX - have you definitely ticked the boxes? Even if you put information in and don't tick the box it won't add that info.

Also, you'll need to remove and add the file to iTunes again for the new details to appear.

If I move my iTunes library, I move it with the iTunes xml files intact, so it wouldn't matter to me. I'm not worried about the tags being permanently attached to my files.

I would be! I've got over 50GB of TV Shows, and I've spent the past month tagging the lot with descriptions and artwork.

I dunno, makes sense to write it if you are going to spend a long time doing it. Also means that if you wanted to share some stuff with friends (i.e. home movie you tagged) then when they use the file it contains it all.

I'd agree with that. I just wish I had known about it a couple of years ago when I started ripping my stuff. I have it all on networked drives, and tagging them takes a lot longer over a WiFi connection.

Still, I have almost all of my movies done and they look very professional using AppleTV. TV shows will take a while.

I know it sounds kind of stupid, but try copying the files to a local drive, then running Metax, and then recopying back to the network drive. I've found that Metax takes literally +100 longer when writing over a network.

BTW, the reason your changed/tagged files do not show differently in iTunes when using MetaX is because you have not deleted and then added the file from iTunes.

If you did your tagging before adding to iTunes, you would not have had this problem. iTunes creates its database of tag info when the movie is first added. Changing the file with MetaX won't help unless you re-add it.

MetaX doesnt even open for me. It just quits upon launch so I use Lostify.
