Now, I've been a gamer for a very long time, but as of late (past few years) I've gotten out of the gaming scene quite a bit.

Anyway, I'm looking for a fun, somewhat simple game (sort of a Unreal Tournament-esq game) that I could play on my new MBP SR. I don't much care if it's a OSX game or XP/Vista (I have Vista installed in Bootcamp and have 10 or so gigs to spare).

I'm looking for your recommendations. Preferably I'm looking for a game that's good looking and perhaps even impressive (I do of course realize the 8600M/MBP is NOT a gaming machine, but cut me some slack :)).

I'm not looking for something that sucks up a bunch of time (not looking for a Morrowind), again, something Unreal Tournament-esq :)

Thanks in advance!

Try unreal tournament lol. you mention it so much 2004 is pretty ok graphics wise. Or try half life 2 thats pretty fun still.

Well I've been quite hooked on Command & Conquer 3 recently... the pace is excellent and the action is frantic and to top it all games are pretty short around the 8 to 20 minute mark. I'd say its definitely UT-sque in nature except its an RTS.

It should also be an excellent game to test your MacBook Pro :D

So yeah my recommendation goes to Command & Conquer 3, even more so if you are a fan of the original because it plays very much like it.

Oh yeah I forgot, Command & Conquer 3 is already available on Windows but if you can wait there is a Mac OSX version coming out this month apparently (but I don't think thats for sure). In any case I still recommend the Windows version simply because CNC3 is a pretty demanding game and games on OSX tend to run slower than on Windows, also, the Windows version will probably get better support as far as patches and content (especially user-made) goes.

sweet, thanks guys :)

I'll check out C&C3... I was a HUGE fan of C&C Red Alert (if anybody remembers that game :)), in general I'm not thrilled with the conversion to 3D rendering from sprites (though Warcraft 3 was excellent and I still play DotA from time to time). Anyway, C&C3 seems like it might actually be a bit much for the MBP to handle but I'll give it a shot! :)

Any other recommendations much appreciated! <3

Suaerbraten (Cube2)

There is a really fun game out there that I play called Suaerbraten (AkA Cube 2). Its a first person shooter where the story is Just shoot anything that moves. It's by the guy Wouter van Oortmerssen who also worked on Far Cry. Anyway, the game is pretty fast paced. I've heard that it is able to run at a max of 200 FPS on good, high quality systems. I have archived a very smooth 60 FPS on my Intel Core Duo iMac at full quality. The graphics are very realistic in most levels. Its a really good game, plus its free. Go get it if you want to. http://sauerbraten.org/
PS It's a great game for seeing the framerate your display card can put out.

I'd recommend company of heroes, a world war 2 RTS, i play it on my 2.2 ghz SR MBP at almost all high settings and it runs fine really great game and has awesome visuals and sound:).

Actually I get silky smooth framerates on highest detail on CNC 3 with my 2.4 MBP, even with hundreds of units. I'm blown away, frankly!

Dark Messiah : Might & Magic

I'm playing it on my MBP at the moment, with pretty much everything on max settings except texture, thats high instead of v.high, and even 2x antialiasing.

Smooth as butter and looks great. And this with only the 128mb version.

Though the MBP gets very hot when running games in windows.

Start playing counterstrike:source...and never stop  .

If you want a fun and attractive single player game, try S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Bought this but haven't installed it on my MBP just yet. Mostly because I think it uses somthing like 7-10gb of HDD space and I only allocated 20gb to XP in the first place.

Yeah it is huge. I installed it on my FW external. Runs just fine and doesn't take up any space.

haha, actually I have source and already have it installed. Although I don't play often, I do still enjoy playing, a LOT.

I've been playing CS since the ORIGINAL beta (i.e. original Half Life version).

Sadly, I was never great, in my prime I'd be somewhere near the top quater most of the time, but now when I play I find myself in middle -> last place :(

edit: as for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I've played it for a while, but to be honest it was just too hard for me. Not as in, "I couldn't be it hard", but as in "That game is frusterating" hard.

I am also rusty, and finding myself not nearly as good as the glory days.

And, I also quit STALKER, for the same reason. How odd!

Oh and for the OP, you could also try prey. That game is pretty and relatively entertaining.

I am the OP ;)

Anyway, thanks for the recomendation, I'll give it a try this weekend :)

BTW, I just mention Unreal Tournament so much because I remember the game used to load really fast, I'd play against the bots even and it was a fun, fast paced, and low maintainence game...

I also love my DS for the same reason. I can play Tetris against somebody across the globe in like 15 seconds :)

Prey is fun, and not particularly demanding as far as graphic power is concerned.

Right now, I'm having a lot of fun with Overlord. It looks good, it's original, and I wish I didn't have to reboot and run it on Windows! :)

I started playing counter strike when it was Beta 6.4 in 2000. And havent stopped since :(

Haha i second this.. i've been playing since beta 4 when the m4a1 had a scope and shot at 100% accuracy when jumping..

I feel soo old :(
