here is how i see it.
---------------------------------------------------
MacBook
lower end graphic's card
X86 dual core proccesor
smaller screen still
---------------------------------------------------
MBP
Graphics card
64bit Dual core Proccesor
still, larger screen.
the new magnet (no latch) feature
---------------------------------------------------

i think if apple had that settup, there would be a much better gap in pro and consumer models. what do you think?

They don't have the choice, not until Intel releases a 64-bit mobile processor (Merom, August/September). I think it's fine as is, though they need to upgrade the 15" MacBook Pro's specs a bit, having seen similarly priced laptops with much higher specs.

I am personally holding out until the Meroms come out, and hopefully they'll be in the Macbook. If not I'll just have to deal with the core duo 'cause I want the free iPod deal.

You forgot though the the MacBook is a crossover machine now. It kinda takes the place of the 12" PB in terms of the Power. I say power to the people.

Remember the days when people were happy with 1.67GHz in a PB. Well now we're not happy with Dual 2GHz in a MacBook. We'll never be satisfied! :p

Why not MacBook Pro with a 256bit CPU? Might as well add warp drive and photon torpedoes while you're at it.

sheesh, what a dumb thread.

Do the Meroms run at a lower TDP? What we heard so far is that Core 2 will run faster than Core by up to 20% at the same battery life.. doesn't say much really if you really put your mind you it.

Oh great. A poster who wants to cripple the MB to create a wider gap. Thanks for the suggestion, but no thanks.

i think the poster wanted to upgrade the MBP, not cripple the MB.

I reckon the MBP needs to be better than what it is to negate the price difference. 256MB GPU and 1GB RAM across the board.

I've heard people say that you wont notice the difference in 64 bit until you get around 4GB RAM into the machine. Is this true or not? If it is, 64bit sounds more like a marketing ploy than a real performance boost.

I do believe he said "even smaller screen." 13.3 is about as small as I would want to go on a widescreen, and it would seem that the designers at Apple agreed.

It's more to push the industry to 64-bit. Much like HD is here to kill off analogues. they figure the quicker they get the consumers to 64-bit the better everything will be. For instance - why make 32-bit apps when everyone has 64-bit? Granted I'm talking 5+ years down the road you tiny scoped people :p

If Apple made that gap then there would be a big gap in their laptop line up.

Then Apple would not have a small laptop which has the latest hardware (at least CPU) - they can't afford to do this now they have the same Intel stuff as everyone else. So either they put Merom in the Macbook or they introduce a line of smaller Macbook Pro's with Merom.

Also with the other companies now with 13.3" Laptops with dedicated graphics laptops perhaps the gap already exists as the Macbook is not on par with these more expensive smaller laptops. Perhaps Macbook will be moved back to be the cheaper line and a new smaller Pro will be introduced to truly compete with competition. Personally I just want a Merom Macbook (mmm black)

64bit is supposed to be pretty good when running a 64bit OS. Though like everyone has said, it will be at least a few years until it starts to take hold. But then with Vista and Jaguar coming out soon I think it will be more useful than it has been up until now.
