People who aren't (or who claim not to be) all that interested in gear and who get apparently bent out of shape when others mention new acquisitions and purchases can just skip right on by this, as it talks about lenses which are only available to those who use Leica and Sony, anyway......

Thanks to Kallisti's mention of the excellent Voigtlander lenses on the Sony FE mount, some time ago I went ahead and bought one, the gorgeous 100mm APO-Lanthar macro...... Now, more recently I've brought the amazing 35mm f/1.2 into the household, too. Both of these lenses are absolutely outstanding even though in each case I've had to come to grips with my eyesight and with manual focusing, which thankfully isn't as problematic as it was in the past thanks to my A7R IV's good Focus Peaking and more accurate focusing on the subject in the first place due to how mirrorless cameras work. These lenses bring something more to the image than was initially expected (at least on my part) and I am thoroughly enjoying the depth of color and the overall magic they carry within them...... Their quality really shines through.

Thanks, Kallisti!! You've got me hooked now on Voigtlander!!!

You might like the 50 apo-lanthar too. It is superb. As is the 75mm f1.5 Nokton - @kallisti has impacted my camera and lenses choices more than I can put into words. He is a great influence and one of the good guys - even if he HAS defected to/from Sony.

Lol. You do know @kallisti is on commission? Glad you’re enjoying your new glass. Now if only you had a new body to go with….

I really love the colors that the Voigtlander lenses bring out......a very special quality there. Eventually I probably will add another one or two but I'm still waiting for the Sony 50mm f/1.2 to reappear (out of stock everywhere) and also of course the A1......

In the past I didn't really use 35mm all that much but now I have discovered how versatile that focal length is and I've enjoyed using the Sony 35mm f/1.8. I'd thought about getting the Sony 35mm f/1.4 but it seemed too close to the f/1.8. Somehow I ran across an article singing the praises of the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 and since I love really fast lenses I thought, "hm......." and did a bit more research and decided to buy one. Very happy with my choice! Yummy bokeh......

Hard to argue with GAS too much here. Fujifilm has been tempting me for about a year now. I've lost count of the number of times a body and lens have landed in an unpaid virtual shopping cart. At least I can say I tried if (when) I eventually give in.

Sometimes I'll hear about a lens or will see one being used by someone and will go and look it up, read reviews, look at images shot with it, and check out the description on B&H, get really excited about the item.....and that's when I usually tell myself, "DON'T put that in the shopping cart now! Do something else, think about this for a while, wait until tomorrow....." Occasionally that works, but not all the time! LOL! Obviously it didn't work with that 35mm f/1.2! :D

Absolutely agree! I'll never be to the point in terms of financial resources where I could be delving into Leica and all of their gorgeous lenses but to me the Voigtlander lenses on the Sony FE mount sure come pretty close at a more reasonable price. I love the two that I've got -- both really stellar lenses!

Bent out of shape when people post about lens on an Apple oriented site. Last i checked Apple does not manufacture or sell stand-alone lens. This belongs on a photography site.

This is a very popular and active sub-forum (Digital Photography) of creative Apple users (in general) who love Photography. It‘s 100% appropriate in my mind. We are here to discuss our favorite subject. No need to get “bent out of shape” :). Lots of other more important things to worry about, from my perspective. To each their own, obviously.

Actually, many photographers and other creatives use Macs and have been doing so for many, many years......it is not at all surprising, then, that a digital photography subforum would be developed early-on and flourish at MR -- a natural fit. On another forum to which I belong, one which IS a wholly photography-focused discussion forum, guess what, there is a subforum there for topics of interest around Apple products.

At one time Apple actually had a camera as part of its product line, and eventually they also had the iSight camera, first external and later internal. They also developed a software program called Aperture, which was geared towards those who wanted to do more with their digital images than what was then possible in iPhoto. It came out at around the same time that Adobe was releasing Lightroom. Eventually Apple decided to no longer update and support Aperture, but of course they still do include photography and those who take photos as being important in their overall customer base. Every time Apple releases a new version of the iPhone they have new features and functionality to offer, as they are well aware that thanks to the iPhone and other smartphones many more people have become interested in being able to take digital photos, and the iPhone offers the ability to shoot both digital images and video with ease and share them instantly with family and friends.

Photography is very much a part of Apple, and always has been.

Hmm, curious comment. Apple don't manufacture hard drives or ram either but they are discussed all over this site. I use a Mac and ipad for my photography hobby, IMHO very in keeping with Apple.

It is the same as there are musicians in the other sub-forums. Should they be told to go to a musician site because Apple don't make or sell instruments?

Relax! each to their own, be cool and most definitely do not get bent out of shape.

Ummm, assuming this was tongue-in-cheek. I’m not on any commission. I’ll take your comment as a lame attempt at humor ;). And have no clue where it came from. WTF?

Thanks for all the kind words in the thread. Was kind of blown away seeing myself in the title of this thread :).

The Voigtlander lenses are very nice on Sony. Very, very nice. Assuming you can deal with manual focus ;).

When shooting my son (or animals/birds) where the subject is in motion, my favorite lenses for Sony are:

135/1.8
50/1.2
35/1.4

All are phenomenal lenses.

I love the Voigtlanders for static subjects. I love the Sony lenses for moving subjects.

I'm still waiting for the Sony 50mm f/1.2, which isn't in stock anywhere at the moment..... just like the A1!!!! The 135mm f/1.8 is a phenomenal lens, and it is one of the three that I bought back in November 2019 on the day that I bought the A7R IV and formally threw my hat all the way into the Sony system ring; truly a gorgeous lens! I'd gone into the store with the intention of buying a different lens but that 135 f/1.8 just kept softly whispering its siren song to me -- irresistible!

The Voigtlanders are amazing lenses and I am more than happy with them, but yes, only for use on static subjects which aren't moving, aren't going anywhere. I am more than pleasantly surprised at how much easier it is to shoot in manual focus with a mirrorless camera as opposed to back in my DSLR days. Even with Focus Peaking and such, though, one does need to be pretty careful and precise! What I'm really appreciating about the Voigtlander lenses is the remarkable color rendering.....beautiful!

Much of my shooting is still always going to be with autofocus, and Sony does such a great job with that, why waste the opportunity to use it? Indeed, some situations absolutely require it.

Lame attempt? I learnt dad jokes from the best!!

Funny thing is a few years back we nearly became the U.K. distributor for Voigtlander. But in the end it didn’t work out.

Only in a photography forum is this comment acceptable……. “When shooting my son”…..

This is such a mystifying comment considering

1: The volumes of non-Apple items regularly discussed on this site. Above, thing like RAM and hard drives were mentioned. I'd add to that that all the non-Apple peripherals(keyboards, mice, docks and especially monitors given that the only stand-alone version of the latter made by Apple is more than most people want to spend on one), 3rd party iPhone and iPad cases(how many people are using Otterbox or other brands of case rather than Apple ones? I know in 11 years of using iPhones I've never used an Apple branded case), and basically anything else we use with our technology.

2. There are other sub-fora on the site that are specifically targeted at discussing non-Apple hardware. In fact there's an "Alternatives to Mac" subforum(I may have the name wrong, but there's the idea/sentiment).

3. There are also various special-interest subfora like Audio or Gaming. I'm not aware of Apple ever entering the space of things like pro-level audio recording gear. Is Logic the only program allowed to be discussed there? I don't participate there, but I'd guess not. Heck, Apple no longer even makes pro-level cataloging and editing software(Aperture was the end of the line).

4. This forum has been blessed as a place to discuss digital photography. When it was created, things like the QuickTake in its 640x480 glory were a distant memory, and cell phone cameras were largely crummy devices. This has ALWAYS been a place where non-Apple gear was a totally on-topic discussion item.

You are forgiven AFB! :)
There was more mileage in that one! you gave in too soon.... Have I taught you nothing about the British psyche? the best way to to show you like a Brit is to get to the torture them mercilessly stage.

Speaking of torture.... you havent sent me any lamp or kettle images of late.... don't you like me anymore?
