A lame Mountain Lion regression

Remember how in Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion, you could drag a file (or folder) from your desktop, hover it over the Finder icon in the Dock, and spring-load it down into whatever location you wanted to drop it?

In Mountain Lion, you can't do this!

Believe it or not, now you have to first open a Finder window... and then drag the file over the Finder icon in the Dock.... and spring-load the file into the appropriate place.

Apple just took one of the most basic and most-used file management tools, and added an extra step and made the process much clunkier.

Very lame.

that's quite a subjective comment there - basic maybe, but most-used? I've never used that function from the Finder icon myself.

However, there's a simple solution - instead of dragging over the Finder icon on the left side of the dock, drag it to the Applications or Documents folders on the right side of the dock (or bottom if you have it on the side of the screen).
This will pop open their window, and from there you can use the spring-load hover to navigate to wherever you want to drop the file.

I did check. Everything was fine. AppleCare later confirmed that Mountain Lion really did away with this function.

Thanks for that alternative solution. But I often drill straight to Music, or perhaps a flash drive mounted in the Sidebar in the Finder... not always straight to a Documents folder. Going into Documents in the Dock would definitely get me where I wanted to go, with extra steps. Making me do the extra steps is what seems so pointless to me.

Amazingly I never knew about the Finder icon did that. huh.

Does adding your boot volume and/or Home folder to the dock not somewhat solve your issue and let you do the same thing though? That's what I do all the time.

If I drag a file or folder over my boot volume in the dock I'm at the top level. Is this not exactly the same as what you're used to? (I only just tried in Snow Leopard so I'm not sure!)

Or, I can drag it over my home folder in the dock and it's at that level. It also gives me the finder window with sidebar for anything I need in there… I'm not sure I am fully understanding how one drag and hover can be more steps than the old way you're used to?

Execute the following command in Terminal and check:

defaults write com.apple.dock enable-spring-load-actions-on-all-items -bool true

If it works, you're welcome...
