Title. I switched to Safari after being a Chrome users exclusively for over 7 years after hearing how Safari is more efficient on a Mac than Chrome. However, I looked at my Activity Monitor and saw this RAM usage for just having a Youtube video and Reddit open:

Is this normal? If not is there anything I can do? I appreciate any replies!

Do you need that memory fror some other purpose? If not, believe that it is normal.

Thank you for your reply! The most "intense" thing I do is use Logic Pro X for some basic music production, however, I normally close out of my web browsers before doing that. I guess I was just worried about the high RAM usages.

it's normal, most likely that memory is not really being used and is free to be taken by the OS if needed.

When an app stops needing a certain amount of memory it marks it as free - as in the MacOS can use some of that memory on other apps if necessary, otherwise it will leave it be for the moment as that will have less impact than actually purging it. This is obviously a very simplified version of what's happening.

Shameless plug, check the app in my signature if you do need\want to reduce the memory & energy impact of unused tabs

I used to be a full time Safari user, but lately I've begun to use the app (Safari, Chrome, Firefox) that works best on the site I'm trying to reach. For instance, every time there's a new release of Safari I lose the ability to access another local network device (e.g. cameras, power monitor, intrusion detector, or other device with an embedded web server) because of "security concerns"... or so says Safari.

All of the browsers indicate that they are using a lot more memory than one would think.
