A MacBook Pro abroad

I'm going to Uganda with the Red Corss in February, and am hoping to take my new MacBook Pro. I'm going during the rainy seaon, iso the air is going to be pretty bloody humid, and it's always very hot in Uganda.

Has anyody taken their MBP/laptop to Uganda/Central Africa/tropical areas before? Are there any precautions I need to take, and anything I should know in general?

Anyone? Doesn't have to be Africa, can be any humid or hot climate.

Probably nothing. You could try cleaning your screen/casing more often if you're in a particularly grimy area.

Will you be able to use the machine in an air conditioned area? If so then I don't see a problem, just make sure you have the correct power adapter for that country.

I spent 18 month in the Panama Canal Zone from 1972 - 1973. We had no AC but we also had no computers. We had to keep our batteries in the refrigerator. The humidity caused mould & bacteria to grow on everything. Take some silica? gel packs (to dry things out) and store your machine in a case with those inside.

We have relatives that live in Jamaica and they have a MBP. Other than using it in an AC area they take no other precautions.

Hmm, I'm not sure whether my accomodation will be air conditioned or not. No doubt somewhere in the building will have AC, but perhaps not my room, which is where I'll have to store it.

I'll do as you suggested, by a nice secure case and fill it with sillica gel, and maybe keep it a rucksack overnight too.

Bring a second battery with you, because you may not have AC the whole day, and is better to have a charged second battery is case of emergency.

The air conditioning would serve two purposes. First to cool the air and help to keep your machine from getting to hot, and the second is to dehumidify the air.

The Panama Canal Zone I knew is gone. Back then it was the US Canal Zone and was ours into perpetutuity (forever). The building I lived in is still there and I've used google earth to visit...
