Is a new AppleTV due for release any time soon?

I'm asking because I want to buy an AppleTV, but if there's a new model due any time soon, I could just wait for it.

For me, I do not believe there will be an update to the ATV anytime soon. If there was, it would be for 1080p. Most improvements or updates will be on the content side since essentially all it does is stream content. When you purchase your ATV, look into jailbreaking and getting XBMC :)

I really hope a new Apple TV comes out before the end of the year. A 1080p model with 1080p movies in the iTunes store would really make my day.

No one knows for sure, but IMO we won't have new Apple TV hardware before the end of this year. The more interesting question is whether we will see new hardware before the end of NEXT year (I mean not until 2013). I'd guess that we will see a new Apple TV in 2012, but even that is not a certainty.

Can't help it, I have to ask : What in the world makes you think anyone on this forum has a clue when a new product from apple is due, much less on the one product they have historically called " a hobby " ?

It is more than fair to say no one here has any inkling. If the current AppleTv2 does what you want it to do ... Buy it. But holding off for some ridiculous rumor that a new one is "in the pipeline" is preposterous.

Not trying to be mean, but really ... how would anyone here have any clue ?

Does the word "Rumors" in "MacRumors" hint something to you??? Why do you think so many people come to this website for? To find out what everyone already knows about?

If you were a little smart you would have thought that with iOS 5 a few weeks away there's a possibility for new products besides iPhone 5 to be launched or at least announced.

The reason why I want to know is that I'm planning to buy about 5 or 6 units to install in my new home to connect to a video server. It would be stupid to buy all these units and then next month a new model comes out.

I'm already buying a used one from a MacRumors member who saw my post. I got a great deal on it, so I couldn't let it pass me by. I'll use it for testing purposes in the meantime.

Can't help it, I also have to ask: does it really bother you that I have asked that question? You must be the kind of person who prefers to get lost on the road for hours because is afraid or ashamed to ask others for directions. I really feel sorry for you...

When is the drop dead date you need them by?

If you need them now, then buy them now.

If you can wait until after the next keynote to see what is announced, then wait.

This thinking is usually what I do and seems to have served me well thus far.

I would think so too. The iPad2 does 1080p so we would imagine apple wants to keep all their iOS products at the same level.
But just thinking about how big would 1080p movie files are going to be is insane... You'll better have a really fast and reliable internet connection.

True. Can't wait for the Keynote. Is it going to be on September 7th or later in October?

I'm already buying a used one for cheap, just to test it and play with it. I'll decide later on the rest.

That would be great, but the key will be what the max bitrate would be with the 1080p streaming. Anything less than 20 and you create compression artifacting.

Both versions of the Apple TV have been announced at the traditional September "iPod" event. But it seems Apple is planning on announcing the next iPhone at that time. Maybe there will no longer be an iPod event since it's not as important anymore.

If there will be a new Apple TV it will likely be announced at the same event as the iPhone in September/October. It is possible now that the ATV uses iOS and the same internals as the iPhone that it will be updated every year just like the rest of their iOS devices but that remains to be seen. It does make sense from a manufacturing standpoint though and Apple has actually updated the software on the new Apple TV more often than their other iDevices during it's lifetime.

There are rumors of a 1080p A5 Apple TV, but we won't know until the Sept iPod Event. If nothing is updated there, don't expect anything until next Sept at the earliest.

We have no idea how often Apple will update the Apple TV this time around, because of the lower price point and move to iOS hardware/software.

Should be interesting.

Not that I think we'll see a new aTV2 any time soon, but I suppose this could have influenced Apple's decision to get rid of the rental service. If they were planning on going to 1080p, they might not have wanted to try and stream such huge files.

Dude seriously? That's your response?

People are just speculating- this is not the Wall Street Journal doing an investigation.

I think an A5 based apple tv will come out soon, if only to stop all the jail breaking, as of right now there is no bootrom exploit on the A5.

...(Also, why isnt ATV on the buyer's guide?)
Maybe because there is no way of knowing, based upon past history, when a new Apple TV might arrive? However, if one where to use the original Apple TV as a guide then you'd have to say not before 2013 (at the earliest).

In any case, I suspect that we'll see a new Apple TV in about one more year, or as soon as the A5 chip becomes a "dirt cheap" commodity and Apple has shifted both the iPad and iPhone to an A6 processor.

Well, mea culpa my response was probably a bit harsh ... but it just seems odd to me .. but whatever.

No need to feel sorry for me and yes I am known to be quite stupid on matters of the appletv. You got me. I highly suggest you base your purchasing decisions upon what the group might or might not know about apples new product pipeline. Its been known to be quite accurate (I include myself in these accuracies).

And no , I am not afraid to ask for directions ... as long as the person I ask is at least in the same country as the road I am on. ;)

That said sorry for my comment. Please proceed.

No one suspects the obvious? Steve Jobs retired early in order to spend more time with his beloved Apple TV3 prototype; he couldn't get enough of the 1080p downloads, Hulu+, and Blu-ray support.

I think you'll see a lot of compression artifacts at 20 bits per second. ;)

Just came here to see if there was going to be an "inkling" of a new aTV.

Now, up here in Canada.. I was just going to buy one this weekend. There are none in stock at any of the local best buys near me. I've also checked a few Future Shops and some have them but most don't.

This usually points to a new release.

I think an A5 apple TV with app support would be my "guess". Angry Birds on your big screen? Why not! Also would be awesome for Apple's foray into the gaming world. Why not transfer the success of your app store to your big screen.

Controller you ask? Using the screen on the Remote app on your iPad or your iPhone would be good enough! I called it.

Anyway.. I'm waiting for some to come in stock so I can use my Best Buy gift certificate on one.

I wonder how that might affect sales? It seems like a lot of people buy them with the intention of jailbreaking. More so than other iOS devices.

Don't think so...

From my point of view, and having played with the betas, iOS5 is going to make a big difference to Apple TV usefulness, especially in the UK, where the other movie rentals aren't available. All of a sudden, you can stream BBC iPlayer and 4OD Player to your TV through the Apple TV, rather than hard-wiring it. And virtually all video embedded into websites can be streamed as well.

Personally, I'm hoping that the hobby is serving as a test for one of the components that will go into the Apple Television. I'm imagining this world where my iPad is my TV remote, and I can scroll through TV listings for the past as well as future, and set my TV to record programmes, allowing me to watch them on my 1080p TV, iPad, iPhone or iMac any time. And where my Apple TV2 in the bedroom will stream anything from my main TV.

Back to work...
