This past Sunday at the airport:

  • Walked up to TSA agent. Rose my phone.
  • Swiped my boarding pass on the lock screen to bring it up.
  • Put the phone down on the scanner. It didn't work.
It took me 3 tries to realize that when the phone is activated via the "raise to wake" feature, it shuts the screen off when you put the phone down, even when displaying a boarding pass. Hopefully this is patched in the future. As for now I shut off the feature (and configured the setting for rest finger to unlock) just because I enjoyed how it worked on ios9 and didn't see a need to change my habits.

iOS 10 has been super buggy and laggy overall. THe only good things are the iMessage and the 3D touch on lock screen.

Flown many times during the beta and twice since GM and haven't been affected this, despite using e-ticketing more often than not. So I read your post with a WTF? type response and then i realised what's up. The phone doesn't sleep due to raise to wake (or rather put down to to sleep) when using Passbook, which I always do. Sure enough I tested passbook and it showed its usual behaviour of increasing brightness and didn't go to sleep when moved horizontally.

However you raise a perfectly legitimate use case where this feature is a problem, hence the thumbs up. I can't even think of solution for that (other than using passbook, where available, which isn't everywhere/everything)

Just turn it off. It is a real annoying feature.
Not really, you just have to get used to it and when you want to peek at your lockscreen and when you want to actually interact with the phone. One of the best iOS 10 features for me.

Not just this problem, when I walk with my phone in my hands, the screen just goes on and off constantly as I walk. This feature must be turned off to save battery life.

Can't say this happens to me but I don't generally wave my phone in 45 degree+ rotations while walking. Nor do I hold it horizontally while walking, which is what it takes to initiate raise to wake. However, if your walking style includes that then, yes, you should turn it off. I'd imagine you're an edge case though.

Edit: yes, tested this to make sure. If you're above 15-20 degrees or so above horizontal raise to wake doesn't trigger. Weird way to carry your phone imo but each to their own.

Edit2: I modify my previous edit but leave it there in the interests of honesty :). It's probably more like 30 degrees

I have Apple Pay card and each time I move my phone closer to reader, it automatically comes up and screen is on as well.
I have no exact idea on boarding pass but I assume they work in the same way.
Raise to wake is a buggy feature but I don't find it as a serious battery drainer of my phone. Perhaps, each on their own.

I fly all the time and when using raise to wake to show the boarding pass, at least half the time the screen turns off when I flip the phone upside down to scan the boarding pass or showing the TSA checker for TSA pre.
Also hoping apple changes this behavior soon. I like the feature but the timeout seems too short.

I don't like it, it activates in my pocket or while in my hand when walking, and when I pick it up from a desk, it takes longer to activate than pressing a button would.

Not to mention, I believe it's somehow the cause of the major battery drain issues I've had.

Turning it off was a great decision.

This may be fixed in the 10.1 beta 1 release. Now in 10.1b1 and slide to the widgets screen, the screen won't shut off immediately when you motion the iPhone as if you were putting it down like it did before.

Also, if you interact with the screen after raise to wake, the screen will stay on longer than before. Before, it would turn off in 3 seconds after any interaction. Now, it will stay on for about 8 seconds after any interaction.

Haven't yet tested with the wallet boarding pass, but I assume the new behavior would be the same.

This would work fine for a TV remote, but for a phone they need to tweak it. Better yet, Touch-to-Wake. Your hands causes capacitance changes when you touch metal surfaces, remember antenna-gate? they should use that instead to wake the phone up instead of relying on the accelerometer. Raise-to-wake sounds like a half-baked thing Samsung would put out.

I turned it off because it kept turning the screen on and off when trying to use the flashlight in the dark.

Needless to say, shining the screen in my face while looking for things in the dark is a bit obnoxious.

So much for that feature.
