This is not a "Windows on the Mac" question, it's a general Windows question. Unfortunately, this is the only forum I'm a part of, so I hope you'll be able to help me!

I run Windows XP on my file server, and I recently replaced the Athlon 64 in it with an Opteron. Everything has booted up fine, but for some reason it will only run things on one core of the dual-core Opteron (the Athlon 64 was a single-core chip). I've been told that I need to reinstall Windows to fix this problem.

The problem is... I have a RAID 5 array with all my files and info on it in this machine, and I'm terrified that a reinstall of Windows could harm it somehow. Can anyone tell me it won't? It's a hardware RAID, supported through the motherboard, but I had to install drivers in Windows for it to see it.

Soooo.. any advice? Other fixes?

I think that installing the drivers should work, but if it doesn't you NEED to copy the files from the hard drive. XP does randomly decide to erase files when you reinstall it without erasing your hard drive first.

Okay, I fixed the problem... somehow? I reinstalled a bunch of programs, and now SpeedFan shows both cores being used. Crazy, Windows drives me crazy sometimes.

Anyways, thanks for all the tips. I feel like I need even more backup for this file server now, in case Windows decides to randomly eat my files!
