A question about Apple's education store

I was wondering how strict Apple is with their education discount section on their online website? I'm a current gr.12 student in Canada, and a prospective student at a few universities here (conditionally accepted, unless my grades drop significantly in the last month). The thing is, I'm not "officially" a student at these universities yet, but I do have their student number for being conditionally accepted. I typed my ID number on Apple's website, and everything seems to be set, with "University of Victoria Store" showing on the front page and the lower prices available.

The thing is, am I basically free to make my purchases now? I don't want to be cheating the system, and causing any problems when I'm not really a student there yet.

I appreciate any help given.
 
Here in the States, if you order online Apple does not ask for verification. Even if you call, they don't. If you go into the store you will have to show some proof.

In closing. Make a web order, go into the education section and pick your school, and place you order. No problems. Good luck!
 
I had this question awhile back. If you are accepted to the university then you're OK. I'd be sure though, if at all possible, to order under the one you are 95% certain of going to in case they do audit, and they DO audit.

You don't wanna have to wait until you'r ein school, so an acceptance letter (or schedule once you register) works.

Thanks to all the replies.

That was the thing I was most concerned about, an audit. But then I was wondering what on earth they could do if I don't go to that particular university? The transaction would be complete, and I'd have no ties with that university.

THey could technically "go after you" for the discounted costs you got from them and associated fees that are incurred from going after you. Hit the Apple Store for Ed. and check out the waiver before you go in and read the fine print. I never did only because I am an educator and my job gets me my discount.
 
in the US, as long as you're accepted to a school, you qualify for the discount.

if they audit, my name SHOULD come up with a HUGE red flag next to it. In the past 12 months I have ordered 6 iPods (1 30gig, 3 4gig nanos, and 2 2gig nanos) for myself and christmas presents, 2 mac minis, one for a gift, and an MBP, as well as 10+ software titles; all of which you're supposed to have one/mac family under the education discount.
 
personally, i don't think many people have ever been audited :rolleyes:
but yes, just acceptance alone qualifies for edu discounts.

depending on your machine you might want to look into apple developer discounts...sometimes they can be better even with the $99 for the student developer membership.

But will I actually get in trouble for that? If they ask, which they most likely won't, I will just say the person in the college was in the room or w/e at the time of purchase, and I was just buying it for her. They can't prove it isn't for her or she wasn't there while I was buying it.
 
you can certainly buy a computer for someone else with your discount...did that once for a friend a year ago. Except some nice lady from Apple called me asking if I wanted to get AppleCare on that machine...and I'm like...what machine? :S

But you might want to buy one for someone who's already used up their once-academic-yearly discount.
 
Oh no, that is what I will say I am doing. In reality I am using the fact that my friend is in college to get me a discount :D :D

Also, http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/salespoliciesEdIndividual.html mentions nothing about Apple giving a sh*t about what you do with the machine afterwards. Except the Purchases from the Apple Store for Education Individuals are not for institutional purchase or resale. part, and you're not reselling it are you? :S

nah, these forums do not condone illegal activities to begin with...just following the rules..but i see no place where this would be illegal in any way.
 
Not to be rude or anything... But the non-students using the student store really piss me off.

Do we want Apple to close them? No. Will they if more people fraudulently use it pretending to be students? Yes.

I mean seriously, do these people have any idea how much it costs to be a student, and the sort of debt it creates? Savings like this can make a big difference.

i agree fully. being a skint student sucks. and i'm not even going to attempt to tell you guys how much debt i'm in! :(

well i mean apple does spot check, and does require student ID etc. for in-store purchases. it's not like you can walk in there and say "hey im a student gimme a discount".
 
So as my mother is a high school principal there should be no problem her buying one for me as well as one for herself, even though I'm not in school
