A question about Edge speeds

I have a treo 650 GSM that has Edge. It is pretty painful. However, I have heard that Treo's don't maximize the potential throughput of Edge due to OS limitations. Is it possible that my Edge on the iPhone will be faster than the Treo?

Why is it painful? Edge on my k790a isn't too bad. It's just the latency that kills because everytime I try to access something, it pauses for a few seconds while it connects to the server. Then, once it has the connection, the data gets streamed down relatively quickly (~20kb/sec down).

Edge sucks for video. And I was told regular UMTS is not much better. I think maybe with HSDPA one could start to see something reasonable, but there's very little coverage.
