I got my girlfriend a iPad Air for her birthday, and she has messages setup on it, but when she send me a text from her iPhone, I get 2 separate messages from her, one from her phone number and another from her email address that is assigned to her Apple ID.

how can we fix it so I only receive 1 message from her from either devices?
I looked at her iPad and she has all the same settings set as on her iPhone for messages.

im not sure what the issue is.

thanks,

Settings/messages/send&receive/ make sure on start new conversation only her phone number is checked off not her email address for her appleID

But only one of those can be selected at a time. OP says he's getting texts from BOTH the phone number AND the Apple ID email at the same time.

Maybe you can suggest a course of action for the OP?

If I had something in mind, obviously I would. I'm just pointing out that only one of those options you mentioned can be selected at a time. It seemed you might have thought they could both be selected simultaneously. Just making sure we're all on the same page.

I did google the issue, but could only find people wondering why their texts were being sent from their email only (not email AND phone number a the same time as duplicate messages, as the OP seems to be describing).

I haven't tried to turn both on but as you said I have had it sent from my appleID email address as well as receiving from other peoples email.. My only other thought is maybe the OP should sign out and back in to iMessage or iCloud.. Sometimes that corrects weird issues like this

Do you have your girlfriend entered twice in your contacts? Not sure if that would cause the issue you're having though.

It's quite strange because you can only select one sending address in iMessages. As others have suggested, have her sign out if iMessages and back in.
