my parents are traveling to italy this week and need a phone for overseas... the at&t international plan is just way to expensive...

can I unlock their phone via redsn0w and they just go overseas and buy a pre-paid sim card and stick it in the iPhone and everything will just work?

if you know about this and have any additional information i could use, it would be greatly appreciated

Depends on the iPhone, what firmware version it is, etc. Unfortunately without any details, no one will be able to help .:)

it's an iPhone 3G running 3.0 right now

Then you should be fine. :) You can jailbreak with redsn0w 0.8 and then unlock with ultrasn0w.
I would like to know the same thing.. 3G on 3.1 with the latest carrier update
However, you might never be able to update since you have 3.1 unless you are using a pwned 3.1 that did not update your baseband.

When you say 3.1, are you on official Apple 3.1 or did you use Pwnage Tool so the baseband was not updated ?

If the baseband was not updated you should be able to unlock the phone.

If you went to official 3.1, the baseband was updated and you cannot unlock.

then they can just buy like a vodafone pay as you go sim and then stick it in and go?

That's the theory, yes. :)

Best test would be to jailbreak it, unlock it, hopefully borrow a friends T-Mobile SIM and see if you can make calls. If it works, then they can pop in a Vodaphone SIM in Europe and make local calls.

Similar question, using SIM on iPhone in Italy and iTunes

I have a similar question. I will be traveling to Italy next week and I have an old 1st gen iPhone (currently at 3.0, I think) that is doing nothing but serving as an iPod touch with camera since I upgraded to a 3GS in June.

So, my question is this: if I jailbreak and unlock the 1st gen iPhone and then get an Italian SIM, will I then need to connect the phone to a computer running iTunes to activate the phone on the Italian/International SIM? Or can I just plug the SIMin and have it work right off?

Thanks for any info. With just one carry-on, I won't have room carry along a MacBook with iTunes on this trip.
