Not without jailbreaking it and running some on top, like Plex (or others). I decided not to jailbreak mine and had to convert 200 movies from MKV to m4v. Just a choice I made.

Not true. You can use VLC and AirFlick to stream your movies to it using airplay. Although this is very processor intensive.
Edit: I'm not sure if subtitles will work using this method.

I want to get an Elgato EyeTV Hybrid to connect to my Mini for downloading and recording TV and movies.
If I was to do that, and purchase an ATV2, would I be able to stream from my Mini to my ATV so I can watch shows on my bigscreen? I did not want to purchase another computer for exclusive use by my television, and thought this may be an option.

Yes, AirFlicks is perfect if you want to tie up an iOS device (you can't use it while streaming), tie up the CPU on your machine and degrade the quality. Not to mention that 5.1 is now out of the question.
You'd need to encode the files from the Elgato to h264, or you might be able to view via XMBC. It depends if you're thinking HD or SD TV. XMBC should be able to play SDTV caps, but some HDTV might be out of the question due to frame rates of ~59 FPS on some networks.
This may be a bit late, but you can do this fairly easily. You have a couple of options.
If you have an iOS device you can use the EyeTV App to play the file and this can be air played to the ATV. You can also stream live TV to your ATV by this method.
Alternatively, you can get the EyeTV software to convert the file to the correct format and add it to your iTunes library. If you want to keep the show then you can edit it first to remove adverts and trim the ends off. I do this quite a lot and it is very simple.
Not too late at all. Thanks for your info. I have a VZ IPhone 4, so no airplay till IOS 5 gets released. I also have an IPad 1.
So, I can download and DVR shows to my Mini using Elgato Eyetv hybrid, then convert it into a format that ITunes likes, then stream to my IOS device? Just wanted to be sure of the mechanics of getting everything working together before I spend the money on the EyeTV andn the ATV2.

I was determined to stream TV from my Elgato NetStream SAT to my Apple TV2. I bought the Eye TV iPad and iPhone app, which works okay, but I don't really want to make my iPad or iPhone redundant whilst I'm watching TV, I don't want a flat phone battery and I'm really not impressed that the video stream has to be transmitted across my (wireless) network three times and encoded twice just to display it on my projector via AirPlay. The solution? AirFlick.
What you might know is that Elgato's Eye TV 3 software enables you to access your live and recorded TV streams via a web browser on your Mac. Consult your manual about using this feature, but it effectively opens up a pop-up window with an HTML video element embedded into it. This isn't a feature of my NetStream, it's a feature of Eye TV which comes with all Elgato products.
So? Well, if you're using a Mac and Safari, switch on 'Developer' mode (Safari -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Show Develop menu in menu bar) then right-click the video stream in Safari and select 'inspect element' - you'll find that the code displayed contains the URL (the bit starting with "http://") required to view the video. If you copy it (I find dragging it to the desktop easiest) you can paste it (or drag the URL file from your desktop) directly into AirFlick's 'Movie URL' text box and hit play. Eureka! Your favourite live TV programs running directly on your Apple TV - that's all there is to it. No extra iOS device (which really isn't needed).
You can also use the settings in the Eye TV web (a button with a small 'cog' on it) to maximise the quality of the video before getting the URL. Just bare in mind the URL changes with each use, so you'll have to do this each time you start TV on your Apple TV, but changing channels can be done through the Eye TV software itself - as you would if you were watching on your Mac - so there's no need to keep the website open and you can close the Eye TV video window if you don't want it playing on your computer as well.
There can be a lag of up to 30 seconds, but that doesn't really pose that much of a problem. Good, eh?
