I am able to add new albums in iphoto with no problem. But I want it where after I drag the photo to the appropriate album, it does not show up in the iphoto library folder. In other words I just want the photo to show up in Brandon's kids folder in iphoto. Is that possible?

I don't think it is. It's just like iTunes in that respect, EVERYTHING shows up in your library, then you create albums (or playlists in iTunes) to organize your collection.

If I have say a folder of mp3's or photos
and I drag them into iPhoto or iTunes.
when they get added to the playlist (library) does another copy get added to that folder (essentially taking up twice the space)?
I know with iTunes I was able to add my music from my windows PC without it copying it to the library, however when in iDVD I couldn't use the songs on the dvd unless they were on the local drive.

when you make a new playlist/album, the songs/pics in them are just thumbnails/aliases - shortcuts, if you will. it doesn't duplicate them.
that would be a nightmare for me if it did duplicate...having over 21 GB of songs and lots of playlists...
both itunes and iphoto duplicate the files that you add to the play list (library) and put them into their own folder
try this if you don't believe me: download a song and place the file onto the desktop. open itunes. drag the song that you just downloaded into the itunes library. it will say "duplicating (file name)", and it will add the duplicate to your specified music folder. after this process is done, your original song file will still be on the desktop, and a duplicate will be in your music folder. to prove that it is really a duplicate and not just a shortcut, delete the song file on your desktop. then go back to itunes and play the song or look in your music folder for the duplicate.

When I looked at my iPhoto folders all the pix were in the "library" and when I open up an "album" folder there were 4kb reference files (even had the "alias arrow" on them) of each pic point pointing to the originals in the "library" folder.
So, at least my version of iPhoto 2 doesn't duplicate pix.
As for iTunes. I've got a lot of playlists, but in doing a file search I can only find one copy of the song even though it might be in one or two playlists.
I think you test w/dragging and dropping the song is flawed because the computer copies the file by default. Just like if I drag a file from one folder to another it "copies" the file. If I want to move the file I have to command+click the file.
