Will the Appke TV download new releases of podcasts or will I need to download them via iTunes them sync them to the Apple TV

Almost certainly you'll need to download them with your computer, then sync.

It should sync as soon as it's done fetching stuff, all by itself... I usually just hit the "refresh" button before I go to bed and when I wake up in the morning everything is downloaded and synced with the
TV
