I recently bought an audio to usb controller for my PC so that I could record sound into the computer from my midi keyboard, electric guitar and microphone. It came with some Windows-only software and drivers for both Windows and Mac OS.
I installed it first on my PC and it was OK for capturing the guitar and the mic but try as I might, it would simply not recognize the midi keyboard. I looked all over the place for latest drivers or instructions but nothing worked. I was forced to revert to my old way of recording the midi by connecting it to my PC soundcard gameport, so now I have a sort of messy work around that requires resetting various audio elements each time I want to use one or the other instrument.
The midi keyboard is an older beast with din connectors rather than usb, so I did not hold out much hope that the new MBP would be able to handle it any better.
As it turned out, I was able to connect the new audio hardware and set it up so that it can recognize and record from any of the different inputs without having to reconfigure the sound settings each time. I was quite impressed. And since there was no Mac software for recording that came with the hardware, I was also able to use Garageband 08 as my software and it all worked fine.
I am looking forward to getting a Mac Pro when they are updated so that I can finally give up the PC machine.
