So, one of my little side projects this year has been to keep an eye on the Steam Hardware and Software Survey, and see how computer specs change over time.

A major hindrance has been Steam seeing the M1 as an 8 core 2.5 GHz Intel processor, with an AMD Radeon HD 8800 Series GPU, so I’ve attempted to correct for that.

I’ve broken it up into 4 quarters, but this is both an early unformatted release, and is uncommented.

Interesting things to note are the MBA and Mini’s gains, the plummet of 2 and 4 cores, and the drastic rise of the M1 GPU.
There’s also a fall in 4 GB and 1280x800 resolution meaning that most of the models replaced were older Macs, ranging from 2012 to 2017.

This is pretty interesting!
Thank you for sharing your hard worked data.

By looking at it, I see Mac OS share is slightly declining, but significant increase in MacBook Air users.
Hopefully, this can persuade developers to come up with more Mac native games..

Yes, the Mac share, and to a lesser extent, Linux share fell due to a massive influx of gaming PCs (while not shown, AMD processors on Windows rose 5%). It's starting to climb back up now.

Ah, it probably won't surprise anyone, but the two other GPUs that rose in use relate to the early 2020 Air, mid 2020 13 inch Pro, and the 2019 16 inch MacBook Pro.

Interestingly, it seems that for the most part, it was the consumer Macs being replaced, going by the GPU vendor stat, but that towards the end of the period, the more professional Macs (ones with AMD GPUs), were being replaced with M1s.

nVidia's really too hard to tell because a lot of the GPUs by them are falling under the 0.15% cutoff, then rising back up. I know the stats give them about 0.65 to 1.3%, but I'd say it's closer to 2%.

Interesting write-up!

Things that caught my attention:
- How fast M1 Macs are taking over. One year after the start of the transition, already more than a quarter of Macs are not Intel anymore.
- How many Macs have just Intel graphics. That's a big reason for developers not focussing on the Mac I guess.
- How small Mac marketshare is. Only 3% is really nothing, especially thinking many have ****** Intel graphics.

Apple Silicon in iPhones has a tendency to increase performance in a very impressive manner year-over-year. For that reason, I think the outlook for Apple Silicon-based computers has incredible upside potential.

Yes. The M1 basically leapt from no use to becoming the most common Mac GPU in April/May, which is pretty crazy.

It's a limited sample size, I admit, but there has been some interesting results. There's a wide variety of Intel GPUs being used, all of them being either top end or custom. There's been no 610 or 620s showing up, for example. It does hint that Apple's been seeking comparatively low energy, high performance GPUs.

And while the majority of Macs are 13 inch laptops, or are hooked up to 24 inch/27 inch monitors, going by primary resolution, if you've got a secondary displays hooked up, let's take a look see.

I'm not sure about 2880x1800, that brings up a heap of 2012 Retina MacBook Pros.
3840x2160 is a 4K monitor, which seem to range from 27 to 32 inches, and range from $500 to $2k.

5120x2880 would be a 27 inch 5K monitor.
And that 7680x4320 resolution? That's a Dell UltraSharp UP3218K 32 inch. That's $4.5k.
