I'm having dilemma now. Have an opportunity to get a new sealed 1.86Ghz SSD MBA now. But should I?

I have a uMB now and waiting for either Rev C or D but current top of the line model for $1700 is irresistible,....

What should I do?

What's wrong with your Macbook?

Nothing wrong with my uMB, but I'm going for a trip and I would like portability. My uMBP 2.8Ghz got stolen partly coz it was heavy for me to carry it out when going for dinner.

Where are you trying to buy it from? It's obviously a great deal if you want something portable but don't need the power but have the money to spend.

At that price, you wouldn't lose a penny to buy it now, use it until the rev C MBA is released, and sell it. I saw new sealed MBAs with 1.86 and SSD for $1920 from reseller on Craig's List. I saw used MBAs for around $2k. Seems like you would at a very minimum make a hundred bucks or so on it, even after up to six months use.

That is my favorite computer ever!

Good luck.

i will never understand how somebody can justify dropping 2 grand for an underpowered machine that is .5 inches thinner and weighs 2 lbs less.

its not as if the MBA is "portable"...it has the same footprint as the macbook...just more expensive, and underpowered....

....oh and its thinner.

The MB is only 1.5 lbs more than the MBA. The MBA is 3 lbs. I personally think you should get some muscles but it's up to you. Of course if you want better boot time, buy a SSD that is higher quality than what they put in the MBA and put it in your MB. Chick magnet? Good luck with that.

As said previously the price for the MBA is a great deal and you could likely sell it for a profit. Though you still haven't said where you are buying from.

If I choose not to get it, I will let you guys have it.

The top end MBA - 1.86 plus SSD as quoted by the OP - is NOT underpowered in comparison to a MB even in 2.4 HDD plus 4GB spec. It's more expensive granted but not 'underpowered' by any means.

Weight - well it may only be 1.5 lbs (can't remember what that is in kg) but that's still 50% heavier and when travelling, that counts for something whther that be a lack of a sore shoulder or more space to fit something extra and more lightweight in.

And as for 'footprint', that always has me scratching my head. Yes it has the same 13.3" form factor which takes up the same footprint on a desk. But that's it, on a desk. It's meant to be an ultra-portable yet nobody carries it around like a tray do they? So in fact its 'real' footprint is when it is carried normally - vertically in a bag - in which case thinness comes into play and in that sense the MBA is obviously significantly 'smaller' than a MB.

OP - I say go for it if legit - but do some due diligence. Remember, if it looks too good to be true....

If someone needs more than 2GB of RAM they are out of luck and the benchmarks even with the SSD are about 7% slower than the 2GHz MB with 2GB of RAM and the normal 5400 RPM HDD. So yes other than the price and lack of expandability it is comparable to the low end MB.

At $1700 you can't complain if it is legit, but at the normal price it is nearly double the cost of the low end Aluminum MB.

Well I don't buy that for a second. I've used the MBA SSD alongside the 2.4 4GB Macbook, and in my 'real world' use the MBA felt much snappier, and more than just be written off as SSD-specific. A 6MB level 2 cache clearly helps, compared to the MB's 3MB.

MB 2.4 3139 overall in Geekbench
MB 2 2706 overall in Geekbench
MBA 1.86 2519 overall in Geekbench

In the future, the 9400 M G of the MBA and MB will probably improve performance, but the 2GB RAM limit will hurt in the MBA's prospects down the road in the near future.

The MBA has a display five times the quality of the MB... fact! The MBA is thinner, and the MBA is a damn fine Mac... I would take one over this worthless piece of crap unibody aluminum MacBook I am using in a heartbeat! Go MacBook Air. Worth every penny!

That is BS. Go check xBench which factors in the drive's performance!

Someone that knows the facts. Because of the larger L2 Cache, the CPU is actually nicer in the 1.86 GHz than the 2.4 GHz in my opinion. I will take the top end rev B MBA over the top end MB and gladly pay a little more for all of the performance boosts of the SSD in the MBA.

It is light, that's why.

I use my computer for work, it's not a toy. Look, if I can bring a computer with me more places because it is light, it means I can work in more places. If I can work better the investment is returned quickly.

If I get less back pains from carrying around less weight, how much is that worth?

What do you mean by underpowered? What is it it can't do?

Can you understand why people rather want lighter computers instead of heavier ones? Is it weird that people pay more for a 2kg computer than a 4kg one? Same principle with the Air.

Why should anyone reveal this until they have secured their own Mac? Most have questions and are trying to decide whether they should buy or not. Why make unnecessary competition for that great deal by sharing with you?

Seems obvious to me.

I couldn't have said it better! It's a no brainer! I'm gonna pick it up later today! Wish me luck that this is not a fake deal.

This is just simply not true.

Geekbench shows you that the uMB base performs better than the 1.86ghz/ssd rev b combo. fact

The price difference is over a thousand dollars.

With the saved money you can buy an X-25 which is a faster SSD than the one in the MBA.

I am a MBA user, but to say that the 2.4 ghz chip is SLOWER than the 1.86ghz chip because of the difference in L2 cache is laughable.

I personally would wait for the Rev C's. The "lines" issues with the screens have been too widespread.
