Can I unplug the power cord when my iMac is sleeping? Is the machine still consuming power when it is sleeping? Thanks!

The machine still consumes power. If you unplug the power cord you will lose your current sleep image and you will 'boot' up as if you powered down the Mac last time you used it.

A Mac is still actually on when sleeping, it's kind of like a reduced power mode until you need it again. By unplugging the power you'd actually shut it off completely, I don't think doing this regularly would be too healthy for your iMac to be honest.

Thanks. So I have to keep the power on if I did not shut the machine down?

It should be fine from a hardware point of view, but from the software's point of view it could start to cause issues...
