A Small Orange hosting...Good? Bad?

I came here two years ago, almost, to ask for good hosting services, and you guys gave me an awesome answer :)

But, I just recently came across A Small Orange's lifetime plans.

Having already done a search on these forums, I see they've been mentioned quite a few times..

So, anyone have experience with ASO? Good, bad? Mediocre? Is the $150 (400mb space/10gb monthly transfer, same features as regular services [php, perl, python, rails (yummy!), unlimited mysql databases, unlimited parked/addon domains, et cetera]) plan okay? I also have .mac and have no problem using my .mac together with whatever hosting services I get, so space/transfer limitations are not a big deal. Also, if i ever have a need to get the $300 plan (1gb space/25gb transfer), I can upgrade by paying the difference between the two plans.

I am fully aware that this company is probably not going to be in existence for a "lifetime", but as long as ASO exists in its current form for the next 2 years, it's fine with me.

I'm planning on switching in the next month or two. Just wanted to know if there were any people using ASO as their host, and a little bit about the experience(s) they had with the company. They came highly recommended by a friend, and my limited experience so far badgering their tech support with questions about their plans and exactly what came with each plan was unbelievably excellent (email responses in a matter of a few minutes! orgasmic! :p ).
 
I host with ASO, not lifetime plan but pay only $4/mo through a fellow MR member discount. They are awesome, very responsive (helped me on multiple complex issues), easy interface and flexible. Use mostly webhosting but also have couple of MYSQLs running...
 
I am glad to see so many folks having such great things to say. I am now considering one of these lifetime plans myself. I think it would be a good deal for me. I have considered them in the past, but I think this "lifetime" deal may be the thing that puts me over the top. It will pretty much be a step up for me. I host a site through Yahoo for my brother, but otherwise, I have only hosted websites through .Mac.
 
Love them, Can't say enough good about them!!! :D I switched from another provider who gave me a good deal, but terrible service. Honestly, I love ASO. One thing to note w/that lifetime plan, which I too was considering, you can't upgrade it, etc. So if your website "takes off" you'd have to upgrade it to a different plan, and you'll lose the lifetime plan. But if it takes off, you should be able to afford $20 a month, or whatever it is:D

well, space/transfer considerations are minimal, and for the lifetime plans, one can upgrade from the small one ($150) to the bigger one ($300) for the price difference ($150) at any time, even after the lifetime plans are no longer available. and bandwidth can be upgraded at their usual $0.50 per GB.

To be honest, I got tired of hosting what I was hosting on my site, mostly because i keep hovering right around the monthly transfer limit both on my .mac and on my site, sometimes hit the limit much to my unhappiness...without that, it's not much of a big deal anymore. Now i just want a little space on the internet for a private site, and minimal photo hosting for my friends for their livejournals and such.
As long as I have the basics, I'm fine with it. I'm not planning on keeping it for a lifetime, most likely will give it to a friend after I decide to move on, if i do.

Anyway, guys, thanks for all the feedback :D just got my domain name transferred to my godaddy account, and will be making final changes to switch to ASO in the coming days :)
 
I have been with ASO since they launched, service both in terms of uptime and support has been second to none. Add to that of all the people who I have recommended them to, I have never heard a bad word against them.
 
I'll be starting two new hosting plans under ASO this week. I've never heard anyone have a problem with them, so I'm sure I'll be pleased.
 
Yea, I definitely recommend them. They're super cheap, but at the same time offer amazing features, support, reliability, and speed. I've never not been able to manage or view my site, and whenever you need help via e-mail, they get back to you so fast I often worry it's one of those annoying mailer-daemon errors!:rolleyes:

Edit: See sig for my ASO-hosted site to check out speed. (I can't tell the difference on dial-up, but maybe you cable/DSL owners can compare it to other hosts.)

The Lifetime Plan announcement says "There will be no upgrades or downgrades on these plans." I didn't read through all 10 pages of the thread, but was a change made to that rule?

yeah, i think it's on page 3 or something...the only upgrades you can do are either the monthly transfer upgrades, or the onetime upgrade to the medium plan - all other upgrades (reseller stuff, more space, static IP, non-shared hosting) are unavailable, although all the software will be up to date (someone even asked a question on whether or not that "no upgrades" applied to php/mysql/rails/perl as well, lol, obviously the answer was no, they'd keep all that up to date).
