I got my Mac Mini a few days back. Now am getting a strange problem with it.

Whenever I leave the mac on for about 2 hrs or so.. I guess it goes into the sleep mode because clicking the mouse/tapping the keyboard doesnot bring it back to normal mode.

But, when i press the power button.. it comes back.. everything looks normal.. but the mouse+keyboard do not respond at all. I can't do anything so I have to just switch the power off. I am concerned that this will hamper the hdd's life.

Any ideas why this is happening? Otherwise, everything else works absolutely perfectly with the exception of Safari.

Safari crashes every time I open more than 3-4 tabs. I know this could be a memory problem, but all other applications work absolutely perfectly. Firefox works perfect even after opening 10+ tabs..

Please do help me...

Oh, I'm probably all wrong here, but it sounds like a Tiger problem.

This is why I'm not updating to Tiger until the latest bugs have been worked out -- probably not until 10.4.5

At least Panther is stable and not a CPU hog. No crashes.

Is it a BlueTooth keyboard/mouse? If not, do the usual PRAM reset.

As for Safari, it's known to be slightly unstable but I've never had major problems with it. I suppose you could try deleting its preference file but I'm not sure how much good this will do. I know that Safari can use up a lot of resources so it may just be running out of RAM.

ah... i got the problem.. apparently, when i re-connect the usb hub.. the mouse and keyboard(both wired) work perfectly.. i guess it is a small bug..

EDIT- just forgot to ask another thing...

I've got Samsung Syncmaster 710N.. when i boot up.. i get that chime.. while my monitor starts displaying the grey start-up screen after a delay of 6-10 seconds.. any specific reasons?

do you mean you finally hear the chime when you see the grey startup screen? --that doesn't seem normal to me....maybe it's b/c my monitor finally starts up from being alseep after the chime (about 3 seconds after)

if it's happening before the grey load screen, then that is fine....well, at least that's what happens on mine anyways. what's it's doing is doing a hardware boot check (the chime), then loading the hardware drivers (your monitor is getting registered and turned on from sleep). then you finally see a bland loading screen, that hides all the startup services in the background (like starting your network, your gui, printer servers, etc)....hope that helps a little about the boot procedure.

on the safari thing, yeah, it's memory intensive with more tabs...it's basically like you would be opening a new copy of safari for each tab...not ideal in my book. i would either stick with firefox, or go to a different browser, like opera (if you search the forums for opera you'll find some free full version codes for mac that they were giving away for free a while back).

since your keyboard and mouse are wired...why not use a dedicated usb slot for those (hooking the mouse up to the keyboard)...if you have apple keyboard that is....and hook up the hub to the other free usb slot and use the rest of your stuff with it...that way if you need to access something from your computer before it finishes loading the usb hub driver, your good to go...and don't have to worry about switching it around...

There should be a bluetooth preference called allow bluetooth device to wake computer from sleep, click yes to that.

I can crash safari with 10+ tabs open. While doing resarch on my college's library this is entirely possible. I generally use camino or firefox for surfing when I know I'll have many tabs open that are all pretty important.

I would bet that your keyboard/mouse/sleep problem would be solved if you connect the keyboard directy into the mac mini and the mouse into the keyboard (assuming the keyboard has a usb port).

Going through a 3rd party USB hub can be problematic when waking from sleep. As you have found, some usb hubs are not recognized as bing connected upon waking ... hence having to disconect then reconnect the hub.

Yeah, that happens on both my powerbook and g5, its really annoying. the screen either stays black or my keyboard doesn't work.

i have no solution for the inputs not working but if you ever find that your screen stays black, press eject or the control apple escape or control option escape (i never know what it is, i just mash those buttons all together) and sometimes it'll wake up out of it.

i also find that my bluetooth keyboard will erratically get stuck transmitting a single key like enter or e.... i took it apart and cleaned it all but it still does that. what the heezy, 10.4.2 bug?

Fairly certain this is your problem with the waking up--almost everything I've ever read says you should always plug the keyboard directly into the computer (and the mouse into the keyboard), not a hub. I've certainly noticed my USB2 hub (a Belkin) often has problems kicking back in after sleep, and I can imagine that if my keyboard were plugged into it it wouldn't work properly (in fact, I know it doesn't always work--my UPS can send a signal to wake the computer from sleep, but depending on the mood of the hub, it won't necessarily).

The fact that the hub isn't waking after sleep until you unplug it and replug it indicates that it's probably the hub at issue, not the OS (at least in general); as I said, I have a Belkin that does this irregularly. If you have a powered hub, you might try unplugging and replugging the hub's power--that works for mine when it's being flaky. But really, my advice would be to try a different brand of hub.

Actually, two pieces of advice; plug the keyboard directly into the Mac and see if it works properly then. If the keyboard is ok, then your Mac's ok, but if after waking that way the hub still doesn't kick in until you unplug and replug it, then the hub's at fault.
