A thought- Would Samsung be more successful if they have their own eco-sys: ios and osx-like?

I was thinking about this on and off for a while and kind of reflected about why Apple was successful in the first place. It was about user's experience IMHO. People are stuck with their own ECO-system. This is something that Samsung couldn't either pull it off or didn't do this at all. Do you think if Samsung who develops their own operating system and create their own eco-system would have a higher impact on success over Apple at this point? What is your thought? What is your rationale?

Tizen on the S3 shows Samung has some software and hardware savvy. It's way more polished than Android Wear in many ways in terms of hardware and software, and rivals Apple Watch.

However, it has a problem, and that's apps. Not a big deal with a watch, but that would be a hefty hurdle for a phone, and how would Samsung convince FB, Google, Snapchat, Instagram, etc etc, to make Apps for another eco-system?

Maybe if Samsung sold 200 million units, but short of that...

I think he's just assuming that if Samsung does create an OS they would be too late into the game to convince others to produce apps for their OS. Even Microsoft couldn't do that with their Windows Mobile division and their OS was pretty nice in my opinion.

As someone who has used Samsung phones for several years, I'm not a fan of their apps (apart from the calendar app which is great).

They're all a bit tacky. If I wasn't able to use Google apps, I wouldn't be interested.

Actually, scratch that last one. Google are terrible at developing products.

I think that ship of opportunity has sailed a long time ago. iOS and Android are so well established across the globe with overwhelmingly large user bases and matured app ecosystems that Samsung, or any company, would be facing an enormous uphill battle to be successful. As mentioned Microsoft tried it, had marginal success for a short period and then gave up.

For a company to try and establish a market presence and gain a loyal customer base would not be economically viable for a long time, if ever, against the two leading ecosystems. They’d be hemorrhaging capital year over year to make that difficult climb to profitability. I have my doubts that even the wealthiest of company’s would want to risk that in the hopes that they could compete in a reasonable amount of time.

The only way for it to work would be to have something truly revolutionary, if you will, like Apple did with the very first iPhone.

All Samsung needs is the app support. The only reason they haven't left Google is that. Samsung would definitely be successful if this was the case. Control over there own UX and hardware would scare the iFans surely. Samsung already murders everyone in the hardware department and their UX overlay on top of Android is the most modern and futuristic.

They will be revolutionizing the foldable phone/tablet soon. Samsung is so successful without their own ecosystem although they do so many customizations to Android and add their custom apps, you forget at times it's Android . Look how they differentiate even their virtual button icons, they don't want anything to do with vanilla Android.

I believe people will soon get to the point where the ecosystem doesn't matter. Google is making this become more apparent with the Google apps. Some iOS users are just stuck on iMessage which keeps them with Apple.

I think it’s more the amount of products people have with apple than just that though.

Yeah they are just stuck. Once you get to that point it surely does make you second guess. It's much more easier to move along the spectrum with Android, chrome OS, and windows 10 devices.

I’m pretty entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, but have gotten competent enough to integrate an android. It’s not a huge deal but it takes some work on the user’s part.

Though I started with android in 2009 and switched to iPhone in 2012. Had I been with the iPhone from day one in 2007 I probably never would have touched android, especially in the horrid days between Donut and KitKat.

That early android experience makes a big difference.

They do seem to be really getting into the connectivity of their products, TV's, appliances etc...
I guess if they ever manage to get a major chunk of connected devices, it might make something like Tizen more enticing but like others have mentioned, app support would be crucial.

Who knows what the future brings.
