While waiting on the Apple Silicon Mac Pro, and pondering whether I should just "settle" for a Mac Studio, I've been checking the eBay listings for the other option, a 2019 Pro.

If you're looking for a 2019, there's has been a substantial increase in the number of machines listed on eBay. By my count, 21 in the last couple of days and a total of 99.

A lot of the recent listings have come from a couple of California based resellers. One is entertaining offers on its listings.

If you need a real beast, a guy in Seattle listed a 28 core yesterday that is packing 768GB RAM, two Radeon Pro W6800X Duo's, an 8TB Apple SSD and an additional 14TB storage on an OWC Accelsior 4M2 card. $14,999, or best offer.

Good hunting!

Now I wonder: I was planning, in the next 2-3 years, to drop around $2500 on a Studio so I could have a fully up-to-date desktop Mac, and then another $1500 on a gaming PC.

But after looking at those prices, I imagine I could soon find a 2019 Mac Pro below $4k. It would essentially be what my 5,1 is right now: two computers in one. I could slap an RX 6800 XT into that sucker with no problem. And I still retain the ability to open it up and upgrade/fix things.

Hmmm.

There HAVE BEEN some of the 7,1's on eBay selling for under $4k, but how many of those are legit remains to be seen...

Source: have bid on quite a few, going all the way up to $3,600 but i've always lost by a few dollars every single time, seeing them sell for around ~$3,650 all the way up to over $4k. I've always gotten eBay sniped at the last second

And no, i'm NOT willing to pay a hair above $3,600 (with shipping) for one. So until the price of them come down to around that, then I'll continue using my 5,1 hot-rod, and placing bids.

Another source is the Apple Refurbished page which currently has 44 2019 Mac Pros for sale.

The prices aren't very attractive, but Apple is known to sell these to resellers if it wants to reduce inventory.

Although more expensive, I would feel more comfortable spending £4k+ on the Apple refurb store, than on eBay.
Call me sceptical, but I would worry something might pop after a month.....😫
At least with Apple you have the 12 months warranty with option to extend.

Good point.

I've purchased several Macs from the Refurb Store and they were all positive experiences. My 5,1 Hex core actually came with an upgraded video card that I wasn't expecting. 😀

When buying from an individual on eBay, I'd look for a machine that has some AppleCare+ coverage left. Get the serial number and verify the coverage here:

Another alternative on eBay is buying from a reseller who purchases discontinued and overstock machines from Apple. These usually come with warranty coverage.

I’d say go for the two computer solution if you can pull it off. More expensive but you’ll be vastly happier long term. Of course, pro users who go this route spend more time over in the Mac Peripherals forum arguing over which monitor to use or how to get two computers hooked up to one Studio Display, but those are lower stakes challenges.

Trying to figure out how to switch display and input devices between two machines is a bit of an annoyance. I do quite enjoy just rebooting my 5,1 into Windows and not juggling plugs.

Sticking with an Intel system would probably be a good idea for my audio plug-ins too.

Decisions, decisions.

Everyone knows that a new Mac Pro is coming soon, so are getting ready to dump their 2019s for as much as they think they can get in order to finance the new machine with as little lost value as possible. They're not desperate yet, so prices are still a bit on the high side but should fall fairly quickly after Apple announces the new Mac Pro for sale. My position is to wait and see how far prices will drop after the release of the new Mac Pro. I think that the new Mac Pro will probably be as much of a letdown as the Mac Studio was, but there will probably be a lot of suckers early-adopters wanting the new shiny, shiny that there will be some good deals on the 2019. Apple won't really bring out the machine I'm looking for for at least another three years so I can get a deal on the last gen and wait.

With the Apple prices you might as well just buy a brand new one like I did.

It took a month to be built and delivered but it was worth the expense. Only about $2K difference.

And I would have needed to buy from overseas Apple stores as Apple Australia NEVER has any MP 7,1 for sale refurbished. With shipping costs it was just nonsense to go refurbished. I got a higher spec machine with a new one anyhow.

It was almost AUD$16,000 but then remembering back in 2010 my old 5,1 with screen was about AUD$6100 which was real money back then.

Also, last I looked, Apple's warranties on non-portable / desktop systems were limited to the country in which they were sold.

You are right...;)
The base model on refurb is a saving of £700 (with 48gb ram), but only has 256gb SSD and the 580 GPU. Where Apple now start with 512 SSD and the 5500 GPU. So maybe not as much a saving as it looks.

in my opinion, in november 2022, buy a second-hand Mac Pro 2019 more than 2500 euros/dollars is a bit optimistic.
