The thick of it
I hooked my iPhone 4 up to my TV to test its output. While it still won't do a screen dump, the functionality from iPhone OS 2 has thankfully been restored. You can now choose and flick through any of your photos and have them output to the screen. (Starting with OS 3, Apple changed the output so that you always had to start the photo collection from the beginning or it wouldn't output.) I can resume using my iPhone as a simple pseudo-Powerpoint device.

The iPhone 4 only mirrors the screen if you use the VGA output with a supported app. Like Keynote, YouTube, or Netflix. It probably never will do a full mirror without being jailbroken. Yes, I know Jobs does it for his keynotes, but remember, Apple can do anything they want with their iPhones.
